November 15, 200916 yr During the weeks leading up to March Madness, I would care nothing about a TCU type team and who they are playing. But yesterday, I had an eye on the TCU/Utah game and watched the highlights. I even watched part of Pittsburgh/ND. All because these games were relevant to UC and my hopes that they can finish as high as they can in getting a strong BCS bowl game and maybe even sneak into a championship game. The BCS makes every week of the season relevant. It makes the WHOLE College Football season exciting. UK basketball will play UNC in a couple of weeks and it honestly means NOTHING except personal pride among the two fan bases. The game itself and it's affect on March is zero.
November 15, 200916 yr Yes regular season games mean a lot with BCS but lose one game and you are quite possibly elimated from chance to win National Championship. With playoff teams could still lose a game and have chance to win Championship. This year you could have 5 unbeaten teams but only 2 will get a chance to win Championship if you think that is right do not know what your reasoning would be.

So, a team can lose in March Madness and still have a chance to win the championship? Football is the only sport that the national champion is the BEST representative of which team was the BEST during the WHOLE SEASON! March Madness only represents the team that was best over a weekend. I remember UK plowing through Wake Forest and someone else over a weekend and they were unbelievable. Next weekened, they weren't on fire as much and lost in the first game. While it is not perfect, it is BETTER than the other collegiate sports in determining a champion that is TRULY the best team of the WHOLE SEASON. Or are you going to stick with the argument that George Mason was one of the 4 best teams in the nation, the year they made a run to the final 4?
November 15, 200916 yr As long as there is a BCS it is still a mythical championship. Looking at their schedules what makes Texas' resume better than TCU's?
November 15, 200916 yr But one reason why it is not good: If Kansas State wins their next 2 games, they will be in a BCS bowl, but if they lose their next game, they won't be in a bowl game period.

November 15, 200916 yr Author As long as there is a BCS it is still a mythical championship. Looking at their schedules what makes Texas' resume better than TCU's? And March Madness is NOT to determine the best team for that season.
November 15, 200916 yr I hate the BCS. It might make every game exciting. But it's not exciting for a team like Auburn a couple years ago who was left at home. And their season was over before it even started. They did everything they could and still got nothing!

November 15, 200916 yr While March Madness may not always have the best team win that's exactly what it was put in place for. Even with a playoff in football every game is a lot more important than basketball because they play 1/3 as many. I understand it putting an importance on the TCU game last night, but I would much rather have a true champion decided on the field. You may have several undeafeted teams not even get a shot at the championship in football, and that just doesn't seem right.

And yet in March Madness, which it seems is held up as the standard bearer, you can have a national champion that could not even win their conference, a la, Villanova. BCS is not perfect but it gives the BEST chance of naming the team that truly was the best team during the season.
November 15, 200916 yr They didn't get to play in a bowl game? So what? They didn't play in the national championship. A second bowl game doesn't mean jack if you dont win the big one. Just means you won the bowl of the second best teams! What about Boise St? They beat Oregon who is going to more than likely be playing in the Rose Bowl. But Boise doesn't even get a BCS bowl game. And didn't even lose a game!(if they don't lose a game)

Instead teams with a 500 record in their conference probably got in. The BCS gives you the BEST chance to make the season relevant and exciting and names the BEST team from the whole season. While admittingly, it ain't perfect but it is the BEST system to name who was the BEST team of the year.
November 15, 200916 yr Author I didn't know this thread was about March Madness? Reread the first post since I reference it in the VERY FIRST SENTENCE!
