OK, so why not teach both and let the student decide which works best for them? In the long run, the worst thing that happened is you still learned to write in cursive and can now read English in the cursive form.

Because they aren't on the state testing and thus the state has not deemed it important.

 

And since it is not on the state testing whether a principal/teachers get to keep their job or not is not tied to how well the kids can write in cursive.

 

No Board is going to get upset and fire the superintendent over cursive writing but superintendents will be let go if state test scores decline.

 

The state of education gives the school districts direction on what is important to teach and what is not (called curriculum) and that is what districts deem important.

I find that rather sad. I gave reasons as to why it's important, too bad the Board wants to ignore such facts.

Cursive is in sync with the students flow of thought compared to printing.

 

Personalized letters, cards or hand written apologies are more meaningful than one generated on a word document or in print.

I do agree that students do a lot more cursing than we did. Just not cursive.

I understand, as I said, I find it sad that they deem it of little importance. There are far too many advantages to just strike cursive writing from the curriculum.

Teachers complain all the time that they don't have enough time to teach what is in the curriculum from Frankfort, so something had to be lessened.

 

A group of teachers was having this same exact discussion this week that it is sad that cursive is no longer emphasized.

 

Neither has grammar and we are seeing students having problems with proper sentence structure out the wazoo.
