Cursive writing is faster. You do not have to lift your pen off the paper. Note taking in college is hard enough. Keep on doing it in print and you will miss half of the notes!

 

Or you could just learn to write down what's important. There's no need to write down even half of what professors say.

Knowing how to recognize complete thoughts and how to vary our sentence structure makes our writing more coherent as well as more interesting to read. Understanding the functions of parts of the speech in a sentence and their relationship to one another can be very helpful in learning to construct good sentences.

This is what the vast majority of people do and where cursive writing helps out. It's faster than printing and therefore helps keep you up to speed in the class assisting and enhancing your learning process.

As others have said, why not just bring a computer to class if you want to basically write every word of a lecture?

Wouldn't it be easier to just write it down? Certainly lighter and less to carry around.

It is when you add it to everything else you have to carry. Also, not everyone can afford to buy a laptop...

Such as? The battery? If you're talking about books for class and such, honestly it isn't necessary to take books to most classes. I hardly ever use my books during class, and when I have the professor told us to bring them.

 

Many schools now-a-days offer laptops you rent. If there's a will, there's a way. Also, I've seen quality laptops for $300 certain places. Granted, some people actually can't afford that, must the vast majority can.

There is a vast majority of people that simply can't afford it, rather it be renting it or buying a "cheap" one. What's cheap to you isn't to many. College is expensive enough without worrying about buying a laptop and the software that you need for it.

What seems to be a benefit to you is simply not a benefit to others. I have no probelm with teaching cursive. It's just my opinion that it isn't very beneficial. Teach it and let the kid decide what they want to do. I'd imagine many will chose 'print'. Maybe if cursive was taught in first grade more people would understand the 'benefits'.

On this we can agree. As I said, at the very least if they choose to use it or not, they'll be able to read it. That's nothing but a winning situation in my book.

It was taught to me. I'll be the first to admit that I can't read it today.

 

It simply isn't a focus of schools and there are more important things to be taught, IMO.

How in the world can you not read it? Makes zero sense to me. :idunno:

My kids don't write cursive very often these days, but both can still read it.

I honestly don't remember the last time I saw anything in cursive.
