I disagree that it is dumbing down.

 

As a country moves through it's history, it has to look at what needs to stay and what needs to be jettisoned.

 

At one time Latin was considered important and then was jettisoned when it was determined it was no longer important.

 

Same with shorthand in business. When I got my degree, I learned shorthand because it was important in business.

 

No longer is it and thus, it is no longer taught or important.

 

Does not mean that the business degrees are dumbed down though.

You can't always have the luxury to type. Who wants to lug a darn computer around with them everywhere they go? Pens and pencils are much lighter and much easier to carry.

 

You can stick with your pocket protector to hold you pens/pencils and the tape around your glasses and I will use my cell phone.:D:p:p

Perhaps not everyone can print as fast as you. That being said, it's much faster to write in cursive than it is to print. Also, just because the jobs you've had only require computer use, doesn't mean there aren't many jobs that do.

You totally ignored the learning benefits of writing in cursive. I do, however, agree that learning to type is also extremely important.

They taught us in elementary school and as soon as we got to jr. high, we found out that no one cared whether we wrote in print or cursive. This was a drastic relief because I, and several others, could now write how we wanted to (which was faster for us), and that was in print.

I use my cellphone to record what I want to say and then type it later.

That's great if you don't run out of record time or background noise muffles what you wanted to hear. I've had both scenarios happen to me. Also, so my kids have told me, not all teachers allow any recording devices to be used in their classroom.

I'm not a tree hugger, trees used for paper are nothing more than a crop. If you care about the octo, use a pencil.

As far as taking notes in public schools, most to many teachers, print an outline for the students that include most of the information and the student just has to right a few key words.

 

So, to define cursive, you wouldn't have to write the whole definition but rather 2-3 key words in the definition.

OK, so why not teach both and let the student decide which works best for them? In the long run, the worst thing that happened is you still learned to write in cursive and can now read English in the cursive form.
