During the Warren Central/Bowling Green game last night the following took place:

 

Bowling Green had the ball 3rd and 10 on the Warren Central 20. The result of the play was a sack for a loss of 5 yards back to the 25 yard line. Warren Central received a sideline infraction on the play, their first, a warning.

 

Before I go over what happened, what was the down and distance supposed to be following this play?

Sounds to me should have been 4th and 15 if I am reading this right.

I'm going to say that since it was a warning it should have been 4th and 15 ball on the 25.:idunno:

A warning is just that a warning the 1st time. The 2nd flag would have been 15 yards.

The 2nd flag is 5 yards the 3rd one is 15 yards

Yep. They kept the result of the play, but did not change the down. I'm not 100% certain that the refs actually thought that the down was not supposed to change. It's possible they were making that the scapegoat for a mistake they made, as the explanation about the sideline infraction did not come until halftime. But the scoreboard and down marker both showed 4, and the refs "corrected" it to 3, essentially giving Bowling Green 5 downs. The good news was that Bowling Green didn't get anything on the next play, throwing it away, and then attempted a field goal, which they likely would have done had they not been given another down. But it was an infuriating mistake. They nearly made another on the changeover from the 3rd quarter to the 4th, with Central having a 2nd and 12 at the end of the third, and the refs marked it at what would have been 2nd and 17 before realizing the mistake.

 

The crew to my recollection did not call holding on either team, which has to be some sort of a record.

Another question, is the 1st flag on the sideline always a warning, the 2nd 5 yards and the 3rd 15 yards or can the 1st go straight to 15 yards skipping all other steps. This was a sideline penalty no warning given and they marked it off 15 yards!

The 1st flag is thrown as a warning with no yardage maked off. The 2nd flag is thrown with 5 yards marked off. The 3rd is thrown with 15 yards marked off for unsprtsmanlike.

 

Should be 4th and 15 from thw 25 ydl.

Just wanted to make sure I wasn't crazy. I'd never heard of the down staying the same after a sideline warning, especially when the result of the play (a sack) stood.

In a pee wee game tonight they gave no warning. Did the result of the play, a TD, then marked off 15 yds for the PAT.

Isn't it a dead ball foul? Play stands and penalty is assessed on the next play (PAT or Kickoff).

That is the way it was called in the game I was at. No warning was given. The team that scored the long TD was the team penalized. They threw an 18 YD pass to get the 2.

That could have been more of an excessive celebration or unsportsmanlike than a sideline warning.

 

However, in many pee wee leagues, while most play by the NFHS rulebook, they have also have additional rules which are stricter on these types of things.

I understand where that may be a possibility. In this case, the ref definitely signaled the sideline signal. He then came over and was moving his hand up and down the sideline, telling the coach they have to give the ref room to run the sideline following the play. Not that he was going to catch the back that was running,LOL
