All These Forfeits...

How can these teams who have forfeited games over the last few weeks legally qualify for the playoffs? According to the rule book it isn't allowed. I understand that it's likely health-related, but it is strange to anyone else that seemingly every forfeit has been a fourth place team conceding to a first place team? It seems to me that according to the rules, you must play all teams assigned to the district.

This is from the KHSAA football rules section I-d-2.

2) To be eligible to be champion, runner-up, third place or fourth

place position of a district, a team shall play all other teams

assigned to their district.

About 10 years ago Frankfort went to the playoffs because Paris forfeited there last game.

Rule 13

So what about the Districts that have only 4 teams, what happens if a team in that district forfeited a district game?

I would assume the other districts #1 would get a bye for the first round of playoffs?

This is the most that I have ever seen in one season.

GCHS, I know this is not how you intended this post but I can't help but see this as kicking a team while they are down. First off the players and in some cases the coaches are already :puke::puke::puke:. Then they lose a game they didn't even get to play and now you want them to :isurrender: the playoffs. Man your mean :cry::cry:.

:D just messing with ya. I know your just pointing out what seems to be a very clearly written rule. :D

Oh boy....KHSAA, in all their wisdom, is going to have fun with this situation.

This could effect Somerset in the 1st round. My understanding is that Magoffin County will/would have been there 1st round game.

A "forfeit" would indicated that the game was scheduled and an attempt to play was made. For the purposes of the referenced rule, that would be good enough.

The intent of the rule is to force all of the teams in a district to play each other so that a district winner (and other seeds) can be determined for playoff purposes. That intent is satisfied by the forfeit.

:thumb: Exactly, otherwise not only would the team that forfeited the game be ineligible for the playoffs but the team that accepted the forfeit would be ineligible for the playoffs since they would not have played all of their district games either.

Not necessarily. Breckinridge County forfeited to Bowling Green several years ago and Bowling Green was allowed to participate in the playoffs.

What is the reason for having a district schedule if, in the end, you aren't really required to play the game and there doesn't appear to be much punishment? I can imagine a school in a four-team district that is completely overmatched by another school in the same district simply saying "we're not playing." Both make the playoffs - and the KHSAA rule is worthless.

To be fair, I don't particularly care one way or the other. But I do believe the KHSAA rule should be amended if they also don't care.

That was my point. The rule is just poorly worded. If taken literally it would mean that either team involved in a district forfeit would be ineligible for the playoffs. What it does prevent is a team not scheduling each team in the district and still making the playoffs.

The punishment is the loss. Whether you play and lose or concede the loss without playing, for whatever reason (including the flu), one team gets a win and one team gets a loss. That satisfies the rule.

If you refuse to schedule a district opponent, then you will not be allowed in the playoffs. That is the spirt, intent and purpose of the rule.

Makes sense. I figured as much. I had the conversation with a media member last night and we just weren't totally sure how it didn't violate the rule. Thanks for the clarification!:thumb:
