The bottom-line is that there's no easy games...either North or Spencer will be 1-1 in the district after Friday night, and the district leader - either Henry or Hills - will be 2-0. But that 2-0 team will have a tough matchup to wrap up their district slate...

 

If Henry or Hills wins out, they win the district. End of story.

It was awfully sloppy last week...can't imagine it being too much better this week.

 

Neither of these two teams want to have to throw much...

 

North - 79% of yardage gained this year has been on the ground...

Spencer - 92% of yardage gained this year has been on the ground... Spencer County averages just 28.8 yards through the air.

 

North has almost completed as many passes (23) as Spencer has attempted (32). Unusual for North to be on that side of the equation...

 

Spencer leads 3A in rushing per game at 329.0 yard per game (almost 40 more per game than the second-leading team, Belfry)...North is #4 in rushing in 4A at 263.4 yards per contest.

 

Individually, Cameron Smith of Spencer is #3 in KY 3A in rushing at 163 yards per game and Spencer's QB, Erico Smith, is #9 at 99 yards per game. North's Zach Price leads a "running-back-by-committee" approach at NOHS, averaging 81.1 yards per game. At this pace - assuming just one playoff game - Price will finish with about 892 yards rushing, which would eclipse the school record of 797, set by Andrew Tuller last year.

 

North is 3-2 all-time vs. Spencer and has won the last three. Billy Martin has led the Mustangs to all three wins vs. the Bears and has not lost to Spencer as the Mustangs' mentor...

 

Both teams are relative newcomers to the KY football scene. NOHS opened in 2003; this is their seventh year of football. They have been to the playoffs three times and have an overall playoff record of 2-3. They won their first district championship last year. North is trying to have its third consecutive winning season; the Mustangs went 8-4 in 2007 and 10-2 in 2008.

 

Spencer, of course, is a much, much older school, but didn't start a football team until 2004. (If they had one before, it had been discontinued) They went 4-2 with an abbreviated schedule in 2004, and are 24-32 overall. They have also been to the playoffs three times, but have never won a postseason game. Not counting the first (partial) season, the Bears have had two winning seasons, going 6-5 in both 2006 and 2007.

Very true. And they've had more of a deep threat this year than they've had in the past...John Askin has made some nice deep plays for them this year in games vs. Moore and Henry County... All their backs pretty much can catch. Manor being out hurts them a bit, though...he has shown himself to be very dangerous out of the backfield as a receiver...

The Communist-Journal picks Spencer over North. But, then again, they picked North over Henry. Go figger.
