AverageJoesGym Posted October 10, 2009 Posted October 10, 2009 Nice win for the Briar Jumpers who move to 8-0 on the year and, more importantly, 3-0 in the district. A goal line stand by Somerset inside of the last minute of the first half with the Jumpers only on top 13-0 was the difference. Had the Golden Lions scored it could have went down to the wire. Instead Somerset came out and scored on the opening drive of the second half to go up 20-0. With the field conditions tonight that effectively put the game out of reach. Excellent job of tackling by the Somerset defense who came close to pitching a shutout. One of Garrard's scores came on a fumble return for a touchdown, they also returned another fumble to the Jumper 9 yard line and pushed it in from there. The other score came after a long kickoff return with a personal foul penalty tacked on gave Garrard another short field. Somerset picked off 3 passes and was very physical on defense the whole game. The offensive line did a nice job opening holes and all of the Briar Jumper running backs ran hard. Most of the damage was done on the ground by Somerset who didn't pass much at all on the muddy field. Next week's game at Wayne County is shaping up to be a big one as Somerset will be playing for home field advantage all the way through the playoffs.
MountainThunder Posted October 10, 2009 Posted October 10, 2009 Garrard loses by 2 scores to Somerset. This is a better showing than most anticipated. Big win for the Jumpers.
gchs_uk9 Posted October 10, 2009 Posted October 10, 2009 Garrard County put forth a really nice effort this evening. This was probably the best tackling the Lions have done all season. Average Joe is right, too; if the Lions score before half, it's an entirely different ballgame. Garrard seemed a bit confused as to what to do prior to the break. Those are situations where the Lions showed some youth and will need to improve on that in the future. There were a great number of positives to take from this game as a Garrard fan. Obviously you want to win, but this game was a couple plays from being really close. You have to credit Somerset for putting together a couple of nice drives when they really needed them. Both teams move on and will take big steps toward clinching home field next week. If Somerset can beat Wayne, they'll get home field for the entire postseason. If Garrard can win at Taylor, then they'll get second in the district and a home playoff game. Both should be favored. On a side note, I got to meet Average Joes Gym tonight and it was worth it. Great guy who I enjoyed talking football with.:thumb:
nomorenoles Posted October 10, 2009 Posted October 10, 2009 The Bunnies are a team on a mission. They are staring at an undefeated regular season.
