My nephew goes to Walton-Verona Middle School. He said they have it bad out there. He's been sick all week. Asked him yesterday if he was feeling better; he said he feels worse.

Question for anyone: Is it up to the schools to cancel? Or do they get their marching orders from another organization?

 

I'd guess that most school districts wait to get orders to from their local health departments. However, with that amount of kids missing, ADA (average daily attendance) money will be severely impacted. And for those not in the know, ADA is one of the main ways that schools are funded. Seems to me, it would be prudent for the district to be proactive and close school for a week or so and let it clear up. That way, the days can be made up at the end and ADA won't be affected nearly as much.

Apples and Oranges comparison. You are talking all around the state.

 

The example given is a unified County School system who are all on the same schedule (Knox County Schools). Therefore to close only one school is a logistics nightmare. Buses, parents, activities, school year, et al.

 

That's why a whole school system meets or is cancelled together.

 

Bull. :ohbrother: There is nothing you have mentioned that would be a "logistical nightmare." Despite not closing down, Ryle still cancelled some activities. Not all that difficult. Cancelling buses for one school would be that problematic? Doubtful. So if Ryle burns down to the ground tonight, Conner, Cooper, and Boone MUST close tomorrow because Ryle can no longer keep on the same schedule as them? Don't buy it in the slightest.

My sister goes to Ryle and she has been out for 3 days due to the flu. It's bad there.

Speaking of swine flu, I took my daughter to the doctor's office yesterday, because she was stuffed up, coughing, and running a fever. We have a baby due anyday, so we can't afford to be sick. I took her with the idea of getting some stronger antibiotics than the OTC stuff, which didn't happen. I never took her with the thought that she might have the swine flu. Anyways, the doctor told me before we left that they don't test for swine flu until the patient needs to be hospitalized. I was floored by the comment, because everything you've heard is that if you catch it early, the better chance you have of fending it off.

Backwards thinking that unfortunately seems to permeate the healthcare system.

I know some one that goes to Highlands. He plays on the football team he came down with the swine flu last week. His mother told me they have over 100 cases at Highlands. I don't know if they are all swine flu or not.

This is goverment were talking about. And the fact that the schools get XXX amount of dollars per student per day when that many are out they lose even more money. Also some teachers are delaying testing in some classes with so many out. I guess I'm lucky, only one of my children have had it.

He said they are LOSING MONEY by being IN SCHOOL.

 

If it was about money, they would be OUT OF SCHOOL and have school when the kids could be in session.
