Swine Flu and School Closures

Featured Replies

Ryle, which has a student population around 1600, has had in the 550-600 range of students absent the past two days. If a third of your student body is missing as a result of a very contagious illness and the school doesn't cancel, I'm not sure exactly what would be sufficient cause to do so. :irked:

Ryle is having widespread absenses due to flu as well.

Some of the grade schools in Boone County also have quite a few flu related absenses.

Beat me to it!

Question for anyone: Is it up to the schools to cancel? Or do they get their marching orders from another organization?

Would love to know this answer and out of curiosity am tempted to call the School Board myself and ask. I'd love to hear the reasoning as to why this wasn't a legitimate reason to cancel school. If it's because they have to treat all county schools the same - as someone else suggested in another thread - and would therefore have to cancel classes at all the high schools to keep them on the same schedule, I think that is one of the most ridiculous, asinine things I've heard in a long while.

1A Fairview High School has closed for this week due to only 83% of students going to school because of the flu.

Well here in Knox County it floods alot on the southeast end of the county and that causes Knox Central to close. Lynn Camp is the other County school but is in the western part of the County where it doesn't flood but they have to cancel if Knox Central does. The BOE says if one misses then they both do in order to stay on schedule with each other.

And I guess that's where I just don't follow. So Knox Central may have to extend their school year an extra few days, or cut back their Spring Break a day or two, or go an extra 15 minutes each day the last month of the year. I just can't see why it's so important for that school's schedule to match perfectly with the other school. High schools all over the state work on different schedules - some start in early August, some in September, some close in late May, some in mid-June, some have longer Spring Breaks, some have no Spring Break. Kids somehow manage to survive the differences.

I just talked to a principal. She told me that it is the recommendation from the C.D.C. and the health department not to close the schools. They think if the schools were closed a lot of the kids would be at the mall and other places giving it to each other. And she also told me that if they close one they have to close them all. At least the public schools. I hope this helps. :idunno:

I appreciate the information, but still don't understand it. So they THINK that SOME of the kids would go to the mall together and risk infecting one another, but it's somehow safer to leave them all enclosed and closely confined in a school building where it's pretty much a certainty that they'll be exposed? Sure. And why is it that if they close one school, the others also have to close? Sounds like some ignorant, non-sensical rule that someone put in place without thinking it all the way through or allowing for any possible exceptions.

A friend of mine attends Ryle and he came down with the Swine this weekend luckily he has not been to school with it.

This is goverment were talking about. And the fact that the schools get XXX amount of dollars per student per day when that many are out they lose even more money. Also some teachers are delaying testing in some classes with so many out. I guess I'm lucky, only one of my children have had it.

BINGO, you said the magic word.....M-O-N-E-Y....which is ridiculous!:ohbrother:

Teenagers will go to the mall, the movies, hang out with each other even if school and sports are cancelled. I feel bad for all people who contract this flu. I have to agree with jarheade5. If a county or district closes school, there is no state funding given for those days.

But would they not get these cancelled state funds back if they added on days at the end of the year or cancelled a few Spring Break days?

Highlands is taking a hit. :puke: My daughter reported that they were missing around 100 students on Tuesday, then she was added to that number today. Nowhere near as bad as it is out at Ryle, but I see it eventually getting there if it keeps going like this. I wonder how many games will not be cancelled, but will still be affected by it due to key players being out?
