Who Is Marc Maggard?

Featured Replies

I guess I'm a little behind, but could someone please tell me who Marc Maggard is? Everywhere I look about UK stuff, I see that name and have always wondered who it is.

That site is awesome.

To answer the question...Maggard is a recruiting guy who focuses on UK sports. He has his own pay website where mostly UK recruiting is discussed.

And he's absolutely loved.. Or absolutely hated... Depending on who you ask. I'm somewhere in the middle on him, personally.

Who is Matt Jones man crush? For $400 Alex...

I can't stand Maggard. I'd much rather read the opinions of Matt Jones every day. Maggard is a know it all IMO.

And Jones is a know nothing so I guess it evens out...

I"m not going to try to doubt Maggard's knowledge of recruiting, his connects, inside sources, etc., because I'm not "inside" enough to know, but he comes off as a pompous jerk who turns off practically everyone who visits his site. He may be the end all for UK recruiting...but until his delivery changes his site will continue to lose visitors. At least Jones presents information in an entertaining fashion.

Marc is a pompous jerk and he does nothing to hide that fact. Matt is also a pompous jerk, but covers it up for the most part. At least Maggard actually does the work while Jones rips pay sites and then pays for every one of them out there and steals the info. And then when he is wrong on something he goes back in the archives and either changes what he wrote or deletes it all together. Classy...

Two things:

1) Matt's shtick is entertaining and works better than Marc's "I don't care what you think about me because I'm the best" act. Therefore for a UK fan...I would have to say Matt is better. Since I don't plan on being close personal friends with either of them I would rather go with the site that entertains me. Being a jerk to your customers isn't how you keep and/or gain new customers.

2) With the way the internet works these days...there is no reason to pay for recruiting information. It's EVERYWHERE for free (not just KSR). Or in my case it already comes with my BGP subscription which is a better product than either.

I'm not arguing that at all. I know Marc's actions turn a lot of people off, but that's just who he is and he doesn't hesitate to make that very clear. I see it as Matt's site is pure entertainment, and if that's your style that is perfectly fine. I simply have a problem with the way he conducts business in a fashion that is damaging to others that do this for a living by blatantly stealing information and passing it off as his own. Of course that is from someone that does this type of thing for a living.

And that's the trick of running a successful pay site any more. If you are just a recruiting site, then your chances of making money long term are limited...

Fair enough. I agree with you on Matt's site as I don't see it much more than entertainment---though until a recent addition it was losing it's EV to me personally---and I like to find my UK recruiting info on non UK specific sites. As "the average fan" isn't in the business and don't see any foul play accusations first hand, sorry to say, but right now it's one man's word against another's for "the average fan" (as most don't get your opinion on the matter). When all is said and done there are plenty of recruiting sites where petty fights don't go on to find good recruiting information. But for UK related entertainment KSR has a pretty big lead over the competition.

So are pay recruiting sites done?

So are pay recruiting sites done?

I wouldn't say they are done, but if all they offer is recruiting they will have a tough time surviving right now. The UC site I work for went towards more in depth team coverage for football and basketball with skilled writers (obviously not me ) to compliment the recruiting coverage and it has gone well. The UC Scout site went the recruiting route with limited team coverage and they are about to go under. It's just understanding what people will pay for in these belt tightening times...

GT - what are they talking about on Twitter when they are saying that Marc runs a comedy club in Mexico now? Is he literally running a comedy club or is that a joke?
