What does South Laurel need to do to improve in 2009/2010? What do they need to keep doing to be successful? Remember, please be constructive.

South Laurel returns St. John in the middle and will probably start 4 guards with him in Watkins, Gilbert, Wright and Huff. They apparently have a new kid who transfered in who is a point guard that will push for playing time along with the freshman point guard Sanders. Will the Brashear kid who transferred before his freshman year from Corbin be in the mix for playing time? Do they have anyone else with size that will help St. John out on the inside?

St. Johns is Godzilla and King Kong in this region. If they can find anybody over than St. John and Watkins to score they will be hard to handle. I question their ability to handle the ball and depth. Dean and Smith did not get their due credit last year. If Gilbert plays out front they will be very small other than Godziller.

South Laurel will be very good this season. St. John gives them a weapon no one else in the region has, a dominate post. I would expect Gilbert, Watkins, St. John, Huff and Wright to get the majority of the minutes with Sanders playing as well. When all is said and done the winner of the 50th district will have the inside road to winning the region again this season.

Corbin may have the only big man who can truly 'bang' with St. John in Manns. And Manns gives up 6 inches on St. John. If he can be physical and keep St. John out of the paint, it negates part of what St. John can bring, ... but he is also a very adept outside shooter who can stroke the 3 when asked. I think Sanders gives them more depth at the PG and Watkins has to step up even more this season. South will be South and has to be one of the favorites in the region. But it is still Corbin's region until someone knocks them off. But with the coaching staff that South has in Wright, Denny, Sizemore, etc, and their ability to get the most out of their kids ... South will be one of the favorites.

What I've seen of the Sanders, kid their ability to handle the ball and depth will not be a problem at the guard position. I think South, has to develop a inside player to play with St John.

The Brashear kid would be big another big body to clog the lane area. Not sure if he is ready for varsity ball or not though. I would say he is in the 6'6 to 6'7 range and has some good hands for one his size.

Does the Hooker kids injury effect your thoughts here?

Does anyone know if the Karr kid is at South? If so he will take care of their ballhandling issues.

What depth does Corbin have? South is loaded with depth especially at guard. I think Corbin lack of depth hurts them this year. They lost a ton of talent and depth in Crawford Crawford and Smith. Corbin, may be the 3rd or 4th best team in the region. South, Knox Central, Corbin and Clay. Clay would be a close second to South if not for Hooker getting hurt.

I would rate South a strong 2 behind a talented Clay Co. team.

The depth at South at guard would be resolved if Karr gets eligible. With the kid from Kansas, Karr Gilbert, Wright, Huff, Clontz, Watkins and Smith they would be full at guard. I don't know if the Mitchell, Skinner or Sanders kid could break into this rotation. They'll get a lot of JV minutes and hopefully be ready when their Juniors to contribute. Coach Wright has a problem all coaches wish they had with this much depth at guard.
