I would think that there would be a lot of interest of current head coaches who would like to go to South with all the size, athletes and facilities. I wouldn't be surprise to see Coach Martin or Coach Brown go after this job and leave their horrible facilities and non-athletic, small kids. They need to hire someone to take them back to the powerhouse days.

Wasn't Bronger the guy they ran out also? I was told the parents were spitting on him before and after the game and he was being called out by the parents after games trying to fight him.

 

I don't know, that was before my time. I was just addressing the experience portion. I don't know anything about Bronger. If that is true, then I guess that explains why SO football is where it is with the administration.

North has GREAT FAcilities. Coach Martin would never leave NO for SO. He has built something special there. Coach Brown is an Alum of OC, he would never leave. So SO is back to who would they go after or do they even care?

 

I thought OC did some rennovations to their field as well? While SO does have a turf field, anytime you go up there it is being used by everyone but football. What football coach would not like to have some access to his field?

 

Who knows, I just talk about what I hear in the community, it seems that there are problems everywhere. I just wish they SO players would get the opportunity to win and be competitive. I know that this has been hard on them.

Just seeing players on the field and saying "They look big, they look fast, they must be athletes" doesnt work. A kid might be fast, but is afraid to hit. A kid might be big, but can't block anybody. A kid might be athletic, but lack football knowledge and fire that is needed to being a solid football player. Now, you might say, "that is the coaches job to get them to do those things." You really dont think Souths coaches are doing everything they can to get those players playing good football? There are no secrets in football. Every school, every team, high school through Pro, do similar, if not the same drills. They focus on the same techniques with tackling, blocking, etc. Players either understand it and do it, or they try to do it and can never do it.

 

As far as the parent support, it depends on the support. Do they have great parent support that goes to games, raises money? Maybe. Or do they have parents that push their kids? Do the parents push their kids do practice harder, attend every practice, listen to what the coaches are saying and following through with it, etc.. Or do the parents say, its okay that you didnt win, its okay that you want to miss practice to attend a birthday party, the coach shouldnt be yelling at you because you messed up, etc, etc, etc.

 

Many things make a football program and these things are just the tip of the iceburg. Before people start blaming the coaches (which sometimes it is the coaching) there are a thousand more things to look at.

Obviously, you're not from around Oldham County. "Horrible facilities" at North and Oldham? Are you serious?? :lol:

 

Oldham County and North Oldham both have more modern facilities than South - although South certainly does have the nicer field, an artificial surface that is the same as Papa John's Cardinal Stadium.

 

Both North and Oldham have built new stands, fieldhouses, and concessions within the past 2-3 years. Shoot, North's entire football complex was just completed last year.

 

As for Coach Martin leaving North - not likely, with his wife as the girls BB coach at North. And Coach Brown played at, and served his first assistant coach role at, Oldham County. He's a dedicated Colonel and the kind of guy who might spend his entire career at one place, dedicating himself to creating a tradition...

 

As for athletes...well, I would argue that Oldham and North have every bit the athletes that South has.

 

Can't see either Martin or Brown leaving their schools for South.

 

But I also don't see South running Coach Holbrook out this year. He's had success in the past as a coach. I could be wrong, but coaches cannot wave a magic wand and create winners from every group of kids. This group he has has some talent, but they lack maturity, which will come. I suspect the SOHS administration will support him until - or if - there are other issues. My understanding is that the previous coach was given his walking papers for reasons totally unrelated to football.

What was SO's Senior count Last Year? What about the year before that? How do those numbers relate to the respective freshmen classes?

I'll double check the rosters from the last two years, but I think last year's South team had just 8 seniors, and really, only about four played much.

 

I'll have a complete roster breakdown for you tonight.

South Oldham

 

2007 14 seniors 8 played Record 3-8

2008 5 seniors 3 played record 0-10

2009 8 seniors 4 play significant time record 1-4

 

For a 5A school, 5-8 seniors is a pretty small class. I know that Coach Holbrook publicly refuses to use youth as an excuse, but the fact is, you can't win consistently without some kind of senior (read: more mature) leadership, even if those seniors aren't your better players.

 

And they, frankly, weeded out the ones before the 2008 season that they felt weren't ready to buy into the program, and working to rebuild from the bottom up. Doing so indicates a willingness to "bite the bullet" and accept what comes as the youth grow up.

 

Right now, the strength of this team is still its youngest players. And, in watching what they're doing in Crestwood - the approach they've taken with the kids - I think they're approaching the problem from the right angle, attacking ATTITUDES, EFFORT, and DESIRE. If they're successful, we'll start to see an uptick at South over the next couple of years...

 

I don't think the Dragons fans should give up hope quite yet...

I know that I get people riled up by trying to have a discussion about these issues, but for me, there is a disconnect. I will be with a few of my buddies tomorrow who are closer to the program than me, I will pick their brains.

Don't read into my post. That wasn't what I said. I said they weeded out the ones that wouldn't buy into the program and what the coaches demanded. Happens in every program, at every school, in every sport. "No good punks" is not what I said at all...

My opinion is that some coaches and programs allow players to miss practice, not work hard during practice, etc because they think it gives them the best chance to win. Sometimes it does and it works out, but other times it bites them in the butt. Sounds like Coach Holbrook is not putting up with these things, no matter how good a player is and setting a precedent for the whole program. The great programs year in and year out have players that have bought into the idea of the "program" and work to make the program better. Not to achieve individual awards, but rather team awards.
