I head it was 14-0 NC, then 17-14 WC, then 21-17 NC, and that was the last I heard. Looked like a wild one.

Thank God the Nelson County staff likes Coach Nelson and didn't run it up on us.

 

Sorry, had to take that shot at that comment in the pregame thread. As for the game, very evenly matched game. Warren Central went three and out on their first drive, and looked to have stopped Nelson County twice on theirs. First was a 4th and 1 for the Cardinals where the QB kept it, fumbled the ball as he was getting tackled short of the first down, but a fortunate bounce across the first down line fell to a lineman, and the drive continued. A play or two later, Cortez Barber picked off a Martinez pass around the 20, but a roughing the passer penalty kept the drive alive. Two plays later, a Nelson County receiver made a very nice move, lost the corner on him, and was wide open in the end zone for a 20 yard TD reception.

 

Warren Central answered with a long drive down to the Nelson County 10, but the drive stalled, and a 35 yard field goal attempt was wide to the right. After stopping Nelson County on the next drive, Warren Central turned the ball over on a fumble on their first play, and Nelson returned it to the WC 6. On 4th and goal from the 1, Martinez found a receiver in the end zone for his second TD pass of the night and a 14-0 lead. The rest of the half generally belonged to Central, and they actually outscored Nelson County 31-7 until the Cardinal's last TD pass midway through the 4th Quarter. Warren Central led 17-14 at the half. The third quarter was pretty by the boards, but Nelson County finally broke through with 3 minutes left following a 64 yard run that set up a 6 yard TD rush. But Central answered with a 45 yard TD pass from Halcomb to Carpenter to retake the lead. On Warren Central's next offensive series, L.A. Rigsby ran into the line on a 3rd and 3, kept his legs churning, and 54 yards later had Central set up 1st and Goal from the Nelson County 9. Following a couple of penalties, Halcomb broke an 11 yard run to go up 31-21. Martinez and Nelson County answered with a 64 yard bomb, but the Cardinals would never get the ball back, as Central drove to the Nelson County 10 and ran out the clock.

 

I'm hoping this goes a little ways to getting the Dragons some respect. They're much better than they were predicted to be. They're not world beaters, and probably still won't make it past the 1st or 2nd round in the playoffs, but they're a solid team, well coached, and they are executing quite well. The pass defense did enough tonight against a decent passing attack. With the exception of two passes, they had that bottled up most of the night. I've been extremely satisfied with Halcomb as a QB. Not passing-wise, though he did throw that one TD strike, but he's serviceable there. They're running the Wing-T very well, and the ground attack is quite formidable. They've got a stable of RBs, with Barber and Rigsby leading the way. Good, solid win, and Warren Central has three in a row for the first time since 2007. They haven't been 3-1 since 2005. Other than the Fort Campbell and Bowling Green games, I don't think there's a game on the schedule I wouldn't call winnable.

Congrats to the Warren Central players, Coach Rogers and staff. You were ready to play and after falling behind earily you out played a good NC team on both sides of the ball. Good luck the rest of the way.

Warren Central is a very good team. This is the only prediction I got wrong all week! I heard Nelson lost their #1 reciever in the 1st quarter which really hurt their passing game. But, one player don't make the whole team! Great win for the Dragons!
