Banning a number from all NBA teams is not right. It should only be retired by the team he or she played for. I'm sure #23 Labron James will have his retired if he stays healthy. But only by Cleveland and maybe whatever other team if any he plays for. ect. ect.
September 27, 200916 yr Besides, with the young studs in the NHL right now, who knows, the may pass Gretzky in many catergories. They won't come close. Crosby has put up 397 pts in his first 4 seasons and Ovechkin posted 420. The Great One put up 617. I'm willing to bet that neither Ovechkin or Crosby ever put up 200 points in a season, something Gretzky did 4 times.

I don't think he meant that it had to be the players playing at this time, just a possibility that a player comes out of the draft next year or the next 10 years and surpasses everyone including Gretzy. And there is a possibility that it could happen because I am sure no one could see someone being better than any other past greats. There are no negatives toward any of the greats in any sport but I wouldn't retire a jersey over an entire league, just in the organization.

Very good point, stupid question but....if every team did retire his jersey wouldn't each team hang his jersey in the rafters also? I don't think Jerry Slone would enjoy seeing that every day.

The rule changes also made it easier to score than when Gretzky was in the league. It's not only likely, it will happen. As for the retired #23... no thanks. I didn't like it when the NHL retired #99 and I don't like this. Robinson is different.

I didn't like it when the NHL retired #99 and I don't like this. Robinson is different. Goalie's pads are considerably bigger now. I doubt anyone comes close to putting up 200 points in a season.
