Why is this country largely ignored in the grand scheme of things?

 

Indonesia is the world's fourth-most populous country, and is mostly Islamic. However, unlike most Islam-dominated countries, it is a representative republic that encourages democracy, free speech and freedom of religion (although before 1998 it wasn't really that idyllic, thanks largely to Suharto policies).

 

Is it inconvenient for the US for there to be a mostly successful Islamic country?

Are you implying that the U.S. (by which I assume you mean conservatives, as the apparent anti-Muslims) purposely keeps Indonesia out of the spotlight? If so, by what means? Or am I missing something?

To be honest, I think most Democrats are largely scared of Islam as well, they're just too darned PC to admit it. And, considering the fact that most of the large American media conglomerates are libbie-dominated, it would fall upon them to cover an important country that, it seems, the BBC only deems appropriately worthy of regular coverage. And those conglomerates fail, miserably.

To be fair, they do have their struggles. They do have a problem with extremist-Islam and, as far as the West is concerned, are probably a poor representative of a representative democracy. But, outside of that, I do agree with the original post; Indonesia doesn't mesh well with popular rhetoric in the States. That should surprise few.

They do have severe problems with extremist Muslim guerillas and a controlling government that also kept help and aid out for a while during the Tsunami aftermath. They appear very distrustful of any outside country/aid group/body.

With the way most outside countries treat the Muslim world...I can't say I blame them for being distrustful.

Turkey seems to fall into that one too.

 

Their staunchly secular military has been one of the few things keeping an extremist movement from gaining the momentum it would in other countries.

This reminds me of those people from PETA standing in front of that slaughter house that one time protesting against the deaths of all those hogs, when all of a sudden, the hogs got loose and trampled all those PETA members, horribly mangling them to death. But take up for Muslims all you want to.

I try to make a stand against ignorance, but people seem to know more than anyone else, so why bother. People seem to think that we live on fantasy island where there is no such thing as violent races of people. Everyone lives in harmony with one another and life is just full of craps and giggles.

What do mean Muslim race? If you honestly believe that most of those countries in the middle east are not predisposed to violence, then who is being the ignorant one here. Those people have been fighting since the dawn of time. If you want to take up for them, eat dinner with them, have tea time with them than be my guest.

Whether you like it or not the vast majority of Muslims and teachings in the Qur'an are very peaceful.
