Twice in the past two seasons I've heard one of our opponent's captains yell to their bench after the coin toss: "What does defer mean".

 

That's impressive.

Does anybody know of a coach that gives his players a football rule book and expects his players to read it?

 

If someone hands me a board game or a card game, I'm reading the rules before I play.

 

I coached a Babe Ruth baseball team once and gave out a rule book to every player before the season began and expected them to read it.

 

Nowhere better to learn the rules of the game than to read the rule book.

It seems more and more over the past couple of years I see more and more kidsfrom different teams not realizing certain things to do in a game. For example, when it would be smarter to fall on a fumble and take a saftey rather than trying to scoop and run and in the end give away a TD and 5 more points because you mishandled the scoop. Is it the video game era or what? It just appears the things that football coaches even 5 years ago could count on a kid knowing they now should waste the time coaching.:idunno:

There seem to be more athletes than football players anymore.

Athletes give you the wow factor so some things will be forgiving if they dont know the ins and outs of the game. Football players have to rely on their field smarts, that all they have. Most kids don't understand the rules or situations of the game that there playing. Now I don't know if that's bad coaching or kids being kids. With limited time to practice there are some things we just expect kids to know.

In all honesty, what I don't see today's are kids playing any sport without adult supervision.

 

I don't see pickup tackle football games or touch football game being played in the streets or in the parks like back in the day. I think kids while they have better equipment, better fields, are in better condition, and indeed have better coaching, don't play the game enough to really learn it on their own.

 

Kids today just don't play any sports, without adult supervision much now days! Guy's, you don't need adults/coaches to teach you everything, some things you learn just by playing and having pickup game experience!

That’s because they all play the games on the Xbox and PS3 instead of going outside and actually playing the game themselves.

Anyone remember playing "Kill the Man with the Ball" when they were younger? My gosh, we played that incessantly out in the backyard. Soon as you got tackled, you threw the ball up in the air and then someone else would pick it up and run around like a chicken with their head cut off while 4 other guys tried to pound him. My son would probably think I was on drugs if I suggested they play that game now.

 

And on another note, somewhat tied into the "smarter" theme, it seems as though players are so much bigger showboats these days. No doubt this comes from watching videos and NFL'ers act like idiots. It just wasn't that way back in the 70's - at least not to the degree that exists now. 17 year old kids need to just play the game and let their play on the field speak for itself.
