I wish I could have came out to the scrimmage tonight. Sounds like there wasn't much flash but solid football. Coach Jewell and Larkey both seem to be cut from the old school mold. I wouldn't expect either to go all out in scrimmages. Where a lot of coaches, like to show off their teams, these two, seem to use them for what they are. That is a scrimmage to simply give their teams a look at something different than what they have been accustomed to in the past couple weeks. I think both teams will have fine seasons.

I thought Harlan County's defense was much better after the two long touchdown runs. I only had Corbin with one first down in the second of the two 15-minute periods and four in the scrimmage.

 

Harlan County had some trouble moving the ball, especially through the air, but they had a couple of pretty good drives, including the one that ended with Marcus McMillian's 22-yard touchdown run.

Both teams looked a little tired in the second 15 minute period.

HCHS did play better D in the second one. Both of these teams will do fine (and get much BETTER) as the season rolls on.

I am not 100 percent sure. HDE may know, but I don't know if he was tracking that closely last night it being a scrimmage but I am pretty sure that Corbin only had 1 first down after the two long runs. One of those included some missed tackles. Everyone needs to understand that last night there were 2 freshmen who started defense and two sophomores seeing their first game action in varsity. I think there were definitely some nerves early on.

HC: A couple of int's for TJ, nice reads. The tailback looked good. Ran hard, pretty quick. The OL was big & physical and worked very hard.

 

C: Taylor was awesome, he's a burner. Small line, but played very hard, coached well. Watkins had a good game on D. Very quick to the ball and will put a hat on you.

 

I thought this one could go either way in a real game. Both teams were well coached and played hard.

The same could probably be said for Corbin but Harlan County had 2 major starters out and had some real young kids seeing thier first varsity action, getting lined up late and being nervouse caused some havoc in the 1st quarter, but after that they calmed down and shut everything down inside and out. Other than those 2 long runs I cannot think of anything Corbin did that stood out really, but it was just a scrimmage and neither coach is famous for going out there and trying to light up the scrimmage. It wil be hard to stop Harlan County and their offense on the ground for less than 3-4 yards when they start incorporating thier entire offense when the regular season rolls around, some big lineman and quick backs. A #2 preseason BGP Corbin team and an under-rated #18 Harlan County team, just thought I would mention that since I felt the Bear were a bit smudged in the rankings.

Corbin is going to be Corbin, in only their second year I think that Harlan (even with a great coach in Tom Larkey) is still looking for an identity.

 

Both teams will change a great deal in the coming weeks and nobody will remember what happened here. Although it does do a team well to get started (even in a scrimmage) on the right foot.

I didn't keep up as closely as usual, but I did keep play by play and that's what I had. I thought Harlan County's defense looked pretty good after the two breakdowns on the long runs.

That's not to take anything from Corbin. I'm sure they'll be one of the top 2A teams in the state again and those were two great runs. Just because Harlan County had people out of place didn't mean those runs were easy. Once they got an opening, they were gone. I think getting Dylon Smith back would help erase some mistakes like that and maybe turn them into 20 yard runs instead of 50 or 75.
