August 5, 200917 yr There was a lot of excitement in the preseason, and rightfully so. The Reds were a darkhorse that needed everything to go their way. It didn't quite work out, but most of us realized that they were still a year or two away anyway. I never expected them to lose 13 out of 14 though. I disagree. Pitching was a definite plus. Offense was only exciting if you looked at it from the ostrich's view with your head buried in the sand.

The offense was exciting because we had a lot of young hitters. A lot was riding on Jay Bruce & Edwin. Votto has exceeded expectations when he's been in the lineup. Brandon Phillips has hit about what we expected. The pitching has been a disappointment. Like I said in the winter, this team will only go as far as the pitching can take them. It looks like that plane has landed.
August 5, 200917 yr Dusty is guaranteed $4M next year so he is going nowhere. Please don't waste time and energy thinking about anyone other than Dusty managing in Cincinnati next year. As to the Reds this year, the pitching and defense definitely had people excited. I was hoping for above .500 to break that drought. But Volquez going down hurt a lot. And it hurts prospects for winning in 2010 too. Harang just has not been what most expected. And the offense was too thin to overcome injuries to Votto, Bruce, Encarnacion, Hernandez and Gonzalez. Right now, the Reds' offense is just a hair above AAA level. Dusty has recently benched Phillips and Gonzalez for lack of effort and/or focus. He is doing all he can with what he has.
