June 13, 200917 yr LINK Obama is going to destroy the healthcare system. The facility I work for loses money now when it treats Medicare patients. Throw in the bureaucratic hoops you have to jump through and it's a nightmare. Why stay in business and when providers start closing shop what happens?
June 13, 200917 yr Why stay in business and when providers start closing shop what happens? Well, in Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged, the government, after its multiple interventions into the economy, makes it illegal for businesses to hire or fire anyone and/or shut down their business without bureaucratic permission. So that's a possibility.
June 13, 200917 yr He is looking to destroy the healthcare system as it is today. Drug makers are going to be forced to participate which I think most would agree is a positive step. Isn't part of the Medicaid/Medicare expense tied to prescription costs? I do find it interesting that many of the folks who used to complain about the obscene costs of drugs and how much hospitals charge for a bandaid are now standing up for these institutions.
June 13, 200917 yr Author So when drug makers are no longer able to afford the cost of developing new drugs because of government controls on prices what then? I know the government will take over that aspect of health care as well. Medicare is a quagmire of regulation and beuorocracy and small providers like the one that pays my salary will not be able to afford to stay in business if all the regulations that apply to medicare (and other federally funded patients) are applied to everyone. But then again I suppose that like the car dealers and their employees that are losing their jobs we'll just have to buck up and take it with a smile becaue the all knowing, all powerful United States of Obama says we should. I find it interesting that many refuse to consider the consequences that the Socialist Obama's plans will have on many people that currently have good jobs. But then again I guess they have to be punished so those that won't take care of themselves are able to continue in their lifestyle.

So that's a possibility. The sad thing is I can see that as a real possibility.:scared:

Who says drug companies, like every other industry, can't become less bloated and become more efficient? Why do we give them a pass suddenly? You do realize that the great majority of costs is in the area of marketing, correct?

Yeah, maybe if there wasn't a male enhancement ad or some other unnecessary vanity drug commercial coming on every 30 seconds the drug companies could spend that money on something more productive. Like curing cancer, for instance.

Like curing cancer, for instance. I don't begrudge any company for making a buck. However, if they want to use taxpayer money to make said buck they need to participate a bit more. Marketing expense (tv ads plus the direct sales force) IMO is the area that has the most fat. I believe we are often prescribed drugs that have the most push behind them instead of a comparable drug that costs less. For the apologists, if the drug companies can get by without collecting tax dollars I'm all for them charging anything and everything they can. If the want to dip into the public trough, though, they have to be a better parter.
June 13, 200917 yr Author Trust me there is little about the healthcare industry that I am not familiar with having been part of it for 30+ years. How about you address the main point of my post, that being the effect of this on small providers or is it OK with you that people lose their jobs in the name of Obamunism? I saw first hand the effect that reduced reimbursements from Medicare made to the bottom line of the company that I work for. If those standards are applied to every patient we can't stay open because we won't be able to cover costs.
June 13, 200917 yr I can't watch 30 minutes of television without seeing multiple advertisements for Cialis, Viagra, Extenze, etc. I can't for the life of me figure out how we ever had a baby boom 60 years ago.
June 13, 200917 yr The healthcare provider from which I recently retired has not received a rate increase from Medicaid in 8 years. A substantial decrease from Medicare did come through about 6 years ago, however.

They have all the answers.

I saw first hand the effect that reduced reimbursements from Medicare made to the bottom line of the company that I work for. If those standards are applied to every patient we can't stay open because we won't be able to cover costs. If I follow your logic, we should allow the healthcare and drug companies to keep their revenues where they are if they want to get paid with tax dollars because if we upset them other companies may suffer? Poor logic. Fix the root cause of the problem. You're not advocating that. You're acting like we should not challenge these companies to be more efficient . If your company can't stay in business so be it. Isn't that what the "free markets" concept says that you and others spout?
June 15, 200917 yr Who says drug companies can't afford to reduce their prices? Who says drug companies, like every other industry, can't become less bloated and become more efficient? Why do we give them a pass suddenly? You do realize that the great majority of costs is in the area of marketing, correct? A big chunk is for marketing, but research also is a high cost. I have a family member who is a doctor, and they say one of the bigger costs health care wise is the practice of defensive medicine which is brought on by fear of lawsuits. An OB/GYN is essentially on the hook for a child from birth up to the age of 21... Typically an OB/GYN spends six of their twelve months of work on insurance, and much depends on the state in where they are employed.

Quite frankly, we are headed toward a very slippery slope. Capitolism, and the incentive to make a profit has given us advancements in medical/drug technology that would be severly restricted by Govt. run health care. The Federal Govt. is the problem, period.
