I believe that this is a battle conservatives can not win and while I hope she is questioned agressively (and that the media doens't chant racism about her questioners) I ultimately think that they need to hold what little political sway they may have over the Obamacare battle that is looming. I also believe that had a white male said that his life as a white male enhanced his qualifications to be a justise his nomination would have been pulled and the media would have made him out to be the most racist and sexist person ever to draw breath. I also believe, though, that had a white male said in regards to issues pertaining to white males that his whiteness and his maleness made him more qualified to speak about maleness and whiteness than a Latina woman that we would all say "that makes sense."

I'm not sure how we expect one like Alito or the current nominee to divest themselves of their personal experiences and life's walk when it comes to using their brains as a judge. It defies logic.

I say the answer to that question is a definite NO and anybody or any source who says otherwise is wrong. I also don't need any knowledge of any other culture to answer that question. As far as ignoring cultural subtexts, isn't that exactly what La Raza is doing when they chose the name they chose? It doesn't matter what they mean in English. We're talking about the connotations they hold in Spanish. There are no flawless translations from a foreign language to English, just as there are none from English to a foreign language. I do think you're ignoring that community CAN have different connotations. It can mean a group of people who share a similar trait, or a certain geographic area, or religion, or....there are all types of communities. What cultural subtext is LaRaza ignoring by choosing that name? They are an organization who's target demographic is Hispanics. They chose a name that relates to Hispanics. Why would they choose a name that placates or is somehow more acceptable to white America, when their target demographic, and platform of issues is Hispanic America?

So, if I belong to the PEO Sisterhood, does that make me gender biased because Sisterhood obviously only includes women? Is a member of the NAACP somehow racist because their organization contains the words "Colored People"? You are welcome to continue to look for things for which to be offended. It seems to be a prevelant thought pattern. Rather than understand other cultures or ogranizations we are unfamiliar with, we're more than happy to assign a label of biased to avoid the responsibility of understanding.
