Top 5 current Clutch QBs

Featured Replies

I don't care how quick your release is behind the Steeler line. You are going to take lots of hits. Roethlisberger may be a rockhead, but he's tough and can take a hit. Lots of them. And is elusive enough to shrug many of them off. That's not something any of the three you mention can do; they're just not that mobile.

I totally understand your argument and it's a legit one. I agree Ben is tough and reminds me of say a Culpepper in he is hard to bring down due to a strong lower body. My argument is that guys like Brees, Warner, Peyton don't get hit because they get rid of the ball before you can get close (decision making).

I also think the defense plays a major role. You can't be clutch if you aren't in games that matter to be clutch in. When your defense isn't good like say the Saints you aren't going to sniff the Super Bowl.

The Steelers line hasn't been bad the whole time Ben has been there either.

Actually, he'd be on the sideline in a body cast. Nobody can take a hit like Roethlisberger.

I disagree, McNabb can.. His lines have been as bad if not worse than the steelers lines.

Nobody can take a hit like Roethlisberger.

Tell David Carr that!

I don't understand why it's so difficult for people to look at McNabb the same way they looked at John Elway during the first decade of his career. McNabb had nothing to throw to, and nobody to run the ball until Westbrook emerged in the last 3-4 years (and he's always hurt). Those Philly teams that made it to the NFC Championship game had no business doing so (other than the TO year). He doesn't have a ring because Philly has never had the talent to win a ring. They've gotten the most they could with the talent they've had, and that's largely because of McNabb's clutch play.

McNabb hasn't been what I would consider "clutch". He has puked on the field in pressure situations though.

Can't see how McNabb comes in at fifth most clutch. I mean he's won some games, he's led some comebacks, but he's never got a ring. Oh, and he has had more tries at getting one than anyone on the list. Don't see how that can be considered clutch, especially in a pretty successful run first, screen second, run/dump off type offense.

Brees is very good, but hasn't proven to be "clutch" I guess you can say.

Romo is very un clutch, but has had good numbers and decent winning percentage.

Eli has a ring, but I don't think I could ever call him a clutch qb, I mean even I could have hit Plax for that TD after New England's D' had a total breakdown.

So like alluded to there is a major drop off from four on in what you could consider clutch qb's in this league. One that I would like to throw out there though is Phillip Rivers. Now its not a hot pick by any means but I think he has earned quite a bit of clutchness in the Charger's recent post season success' without LT, and without the help of any dominant WR's and with tremendous lack of depth at the same position.

It was more than one pass to Plax. Um...remember "The Catch (II)". Eli to Tyree?

Eli to Toomer to beat Denver was big too.

Eli threw a game winner against Dallas early in his career too.

He's led the giants on many 4th quarter comebacks. He's just as clutch, or MORE clutch than McNabb IMO. I'd say he deserves to be on it more than McNabb.

OMG I cannot believe it. HB to get my back in a football thread? To debate something pertaining to the NFC East? :scared:

All jokes aside, I really don't see McNabb as being clutch, no matter how bad Shoe is trying to talk me into it. I don't care who it is, give them four chances at a ring and I bet they win one. Now I know McNabb himself is not entirely at fault, but the Elway discussion to me is not the same, he only lost it a time or two before breaking through and winning a couple. D Nabb is ofer. He lost to the Cardinals last year when everyone was predicting a Penn. Superbowl, and the sands inching closer to being all in the bottom half of the hour glass. Furthermore, those Eagles teams of a few years ago should have been in the Superbowl. It was clear they were the best team in the NFC at those point in times.

My case...well actually it is Ralph Vacchiano's case for Eli Manning:

In his 64 career starts, including the playoffs, Manning has rallied the Giants out of a fourth-quarter hole to either take the lead or tie the game an amazing 16 times. Eleven times, including a 26-23 overtime win over the Cincinnati Bengals, the comeback has resulted in a win.

Jan. 2 (2005) - Giants 28, Dallas 24. Giants trail 24-21 with 11 seconds remaining when Manning, then a rookie, famously audibles out of a doomed pass play into a Tiki Barber run. Barber goes three yards up the middle for a touchdown and Manning’s first win.

Oct. 23 - Giants 24, Broncos 23. Maybe his most famous regular-season comeback. Down 13 with 13 minutes left, Manning rallies the Giants and eventually hits Amani Toomer with a game-winning touchdown with 5 seconds to go.

Sept. 17 – Giants 30, Eagles 24. Trailng 24-7 entering the fourth quarter, Manning engineers his biggest rally in his best game (31 for 45, 371 yards, three TDs), tying the game with a field goal drive in the final seconds. He won it on a a 31-yard pass to Plaxico Burress late in OT with two Eagles defenders about to hit him on a blitz.

Dec. 2 – Giants 21, Bears 16. With their season slipping away, the Giants trail 16-7 before scoring twice in the final 6:54. The game-winning 2-yard run by Reuben Droughns (set up by a brilliant pass to Burress) comes with 1:33 remaining.

Feb. 3 (2008) – Giants 17, Patriots 14. Down 14-10 with 2:39 to go against the undefeated New England Patriots, Manning calmly jogged out onto the … oh, you know the rest.

Sept. 21 – Giants 26, Bengals 23. Down 20-16 with 4:39 left, Manning leads them to a go-ahead TD to Kevin Boss with 1:50 left. The Bengals rally to kick a FG at the end of regulation, but Manning connects on a couple of big passes to set up the game-winning field goal in OT.

Those are the best ones. There are more...here.

I know, I know, but the fact of the good argument is just to state the facts that make your argument look good. Basically the same way you just did. Although I despise the G-Men, I will admit the Tyree play was incredible, and Eli was the one who created it by escaping the rush and the sack, while Tyree also done an incredible job at making the grab. Eli almost overthrew him though, but not knocking anything about that play, again some magic to escape that pressure.

Other than what you have mentioned though, I don't see Eli as being clutch. Until that four or five game run at the end of the Super Bowl season Eli was failing to meet the expectations and pressures that comes with being a vital part of a NYC athlete. He silenced everybody with that ending, but before then and to now, I don't think he has done too much else that would distinguish himself from any other QB in the 5-15 range. Let's not forget the Giants barely made the post season that year, and like the Cardinals of this year just got hot at the right time. I was saying it then, I'll say it now, they were not the best team in football that year regardless of the ring.

Six games in about five seasons?

Clutch. I mean that is some Brady stuff right there.

Oh and one of the so called clutch games and clutch moments was audibling to a run play, the other a comeback against last years mighty Bengals.

The Giants clinched a playoff spot that year in week 15. They didn't barely make it.

We're not talking about the top 5 overall QB's based on production. We're talking about "clutch". Romo has better numbers than Eli, but Eli is far more "clutch" than Romo.

McNabb has better numbers than Eli. But Eli is more "clutch". Eli is his best in the 4th quarter, in big games. When the game is on the line, he plays his best no matter how he has played the rest of the game. The chicago game I listed is a perfect example. He played awful all game long, but ended up leading them to the win in the 4th. He's the definition of clutch IMO.

Apparently you skimmed my post. Re-read it and get back to me. It's 16 games, in 4 full seasons and part of another. And that's not counting others from last season...

Add at least one more to that list dolamite. It's 17 games. Eli led the Giants past the Steelers in Pittsburgh last year with a 4th quarter comeback.

It's okay man I will take your word on it. :D

Eli is CLuTCH.

Oh and sorry for just skimming your post I totally missed the link, and no not being sarcastic I truly just missed the link. However, I know you have done your homework and I respect that and the links to back it up. BUT, just cannot get myself to open up a webpage filled with nothing but Giants comebacks. I was like self, you should do this to see whether or not Eli may be one of the clutch quarterbacks in the game. Then, self was like, "you wan't me to do what?"
