Best Mexican Food in Louisville?

El Mundo followed by Sol Astecas followed by El Nopal, forget the rest.

Forget Santa Fe? Never.

I have never had El Mundo, but I will say that of what I've sampled, Sol Aztecas is probably my favorite. But sometimes, after a long day of racing at Churchill Downs or just whenever in the South Third Street area, there's nothing better than a little sit-down at Santa Fe. (Note: the salsa at Santa Fe is the kicker... to my mind, it's far better than the salsa I've had at other mexican restaurants.)

Further Note: sometimes at 3 a.m. in the Highlands, only LaBamba will suffice. No amount of Spinelli's pizza or Derby City Dogs will satisfy the urge for a Super Combination Burrito.

El Mundo, hands down, no question, w/ Sante Fe on 3rd st. by PJCS a distant second. & if you ever find yourself in New Albany give La Rosita's a try. The food's close to El Mundo but beer only - no Margarita's...

Mexican in Louisville is mostly cookie cutter. I haven't been to El Mundo and have heard great things about it, but most all the others are hardly much different from each other then the restaraunt's seating package.

However there are beginning to appear in the Louisville area a number of authenitic Mexican Taco eateries. These are much different from you Taco Bell and cater to the growing Hispanic population. If want the real thing try one of these it will change your concept of Mexican food.

Are you talking about places like Las Gorditas?

I don't find La Bamba's enjoyable at any time of the day or at any level of sobreity.

El Tarasco's on New Cut Rd near Iroquois park is good. Not a real big place. Beats El Nopal which is right acrosss the street. Ernesto's is almost become a Tumbleweed.

Amateur.

I never said I didn't eat it...just that I didn't find it enjoyable. And with Jimmy Johns delivery hours I no longer see the purpose in it. (I live directly across the street from La Bamba's).

That's fair but also interesting because I've never been more disappointed when I open up a food wrapper at 3 a.m. to find a Jimmy John's sandwich inside. To each his own I suppose.

In other news, I found out why I've never been to El Mundo... it's classy and I don't do classy. :D And this is a direct quote from my source: "They have those top-shelf margaritas, and their regular margaritas aren't any good, so you have to get the top-shelf or it isn't worth it. I think I'll stick with El Nopal." Hah. Then again, I'm not a margarita fan, so I'll just stick with the places I know that will serve me that nice, cold, 32-ounce Dos Equis.

I am always very pumped to open an Italian Night Club with hot peppers.

I'd agree that the majority of Mexican restaurants in Louisville are pretty much the same. But I'd definitely have to say Ernesto's off Breckenridge is my favorite.
