Walking:

Featured Replies

This morning I ran 5 and walked 3. Tomorrow will be strength training followed by a 3 mile walk. Don't leave out strength training from a fitness program, it's every bit as important as the aerobic part. Keep up the good work and make it a part of your daily routine. I recommend doing it early before the rest of the day gets in the way.:ylsuper:

What's your definition of "early?"

What's your definition of "early?"

For me it's usually 5:30 or so. I realize that's a little extreme for most but it's normal for quite a few us at the Ashland YMCA. How about starting as early as you can so as not to be late for work or school? I started the early morning routine about 20 years ago when my children first came along so I wouldn't be diverted in the evenings. It's does take discipline though.

Walking was a huge part of my weight loss plan. (I've recenly lost 130 lbs.). I wear a pedometer everywhere and try to get at least 10000 steps every day. I did treadmill and elliptical this winter and am loving getting outside.

That's awesome All Tell, congratulations. :thumb:

I usually get to work at around 9. But my schedule is extremely flexible, so it might be 9 a.m. three days of the week, and noon two other days, and 8 a.m. another day. That's part of my problem -- I can't set up a proper routine because my work schedule varies so much from day to day.

That's why the exercise bike at home works best. But 5:30 a.m. is still completely absurd in my eyes. :D

My employer offers a program through Virgin Health, and for $5 a month we are given a pedometer to register our steps. You get points for acheiving certain milestones per day. The points add up and you can get some very nice gifts. Last year I registered enough to get $275 in gift certificates which I used at Best Buy. I would highly recommend a pedometer for those who walk, it motivates me to get out and walk, at least 7K in the winter and during the summer 10-12K is my goal.

When I use my pedometer, it makes me want to walk more. I check it at various "landmark" areas within some of my various routes, and then get all excited and see how far it is to the next landmark. I've a very competitive person, and frankly, walking with my dog didn't offer much in a feeling of "winning". I enjoyed it, and always felt de-stressed. But since I got my pedometer, when I walk, I feel like I won something when I hit certain milestones. I'm such a freak.

After Derby, I plan to get back to getting up at 4:30 to walk my dog for an hour before getting ready for work. I leave the house at 6:05 every morning, and am at work @ 6:30. I have to push it to get ready on time, but it is so worth it! I try to get another hour in each evening. But I'm not nearly as good at being committed after work as I am when I start my day with a walk.

4:30 a.m., eh? Yeah, I have to agree with your earlier post.

At least I can admit it. :D:p

This is why we don't walk more often. The only time I see 4:30 a.m. (or 6:30 a.m. for that matter) is when I am STILL awake.

I'm more on Jim's schedule.

Same here. I've been doing it long enough that now on the weekends I wake up at 5:00 with out an alarm.
