I was wondering, what do you think about football camps? Are they worth while to attend, and what can be gained form them. If you would like to recommend any camps feel free.

I, personally, think football camps can be very beneficial. But, the player has to put the effort into it to get the true benefit. If the player is wanting to improve, they can come away from a camp a lot better player, then they were before they went.

 

There are several kinds of football camps: youth camps, high school skill camps, contact camps, and senior camps. Youth camps are normally non-contact and are just focused on teaching the theory of football. In theory, I mean they learn what they should do, but it is not contact, so they don't get to do it immediately.

 

High school skill camps are the same as youth camps, but a little more intense, and possibly more high octane. They teach the theory and are non contact, so the players don't get to use what they learn immediately.

 

Contact camps, are few and far between, but in my mind, are the best camps to learn from. The theory is taught and put to use immediately, so a player learns from their mistakes and get plenty of reps at doing one particular thing. It is impossible to learn to tackle and block without making contact with a real player at real speed. Contact camps can dramatically help a football player.

 

Senior camps are basically a try out for a, or a group, of college coaches. Players are there to get exposure, to be seen by college coaches, and to possible garner some attention from college that may offer them a scholarship.

 

All of these camps can be beneficial and can make a player better, you just have to be realistic in what you want, and what you are going to get.

 

Youth Camps:

You can find youth camps at basically any high school, youth league, or college.

High School Skill Camps:

Again you find youth camps at basically any high school, or college.

Contact Camps:

The best one that I know of is Offense-Defense Football Camps and can be seen at 0-D.com. You won't find many contact camps.

Senior Camps:

Are held at every college in America.

If I were to send my kids to a camp, I would send them to the college camp were they would like to go to school. That way the coaches can see the kid for themselfs. You will get more bag for your buck and some good face time for your kids in front of a prospective coach. I would not send them to these combines, they are just money makers for the people putting them on.

I think it's a chance for the players to bond and coaches to relax and for once not have all that preasure on them.

My son has always benefitted from Hawg Heaven. They didn't have that camp last year, it was replaced by another lineman camp....he liked that one too, but stated that Hawg Heaven was better, he learned more and had a better time overall.

Stay away from Ohio State - there's about 1000 kids there and the player to coach ratio is ridiculous - just a money maker.

Yes, Indivdual camps.

Hawg Heaven, the camp that Joe Prince at Owensboro runs, is an outstanding full contact lineman camp. They really get after it there!

He may have it in June this year. A lot of schools didn't go last year because it was too close to the start of school/season.

I understand that Rockcastle will be sending some linemen and tight ends to Hawg Heaven in July before practices start.

I think McCreary Central will be sending 8 to 10 linemen to Camp at Campbellsville. Hawg Heaven

My son participated in a the Blue-Gray Showcase camp in Cincinnati last weekend. They run it like an NFL combine. Even though coaches are not able to attend, the information they tracked during this day will be available to college coaches through their website. The initial benefit from the camp was it showed my son he can compete with kids that were bigger than him in both height and weight and is looking forward to his senior season.
