Covington Catholic 5 Highlands 2

Featured Replies

If you enjoy watching catchers do their thing behind the plate, you have got to come again to the CovCath vs. Highlands game on Monday, to watch Maile and Liggett. They are without any doubt in my mind the two best defensive catchers in NKy and maybe in Kentucky. In saying that however, it's easy to see why Maile is a signed D1 catcher and hot MLB prospect, as he moves, (or should I say glides) behind the plate so well. Liggett is extremelly good, but even a baseball novice could see the difference and that isn't a knock on Liggett at all.

Lukes catch, throw and Siemer tag on the very, very fast Oliver Head (yes the HHS football DB and running back) in the top of the fourth to end the inning was a thing of beauty. Maile throw to second was a frozen rope on a line to the lower first base side corner of second base, and hit Siemer glove as Head slide into second base. It was indeed a bang, bang play!

Liggett is only a jr...Maile is a sr:rolleyes:

Thats a pretty large gap. . .

Still too early for a read on CCH. HHS had many official and unofficial errors that kept innings going.

I want to see how CCH does against the top pitchers before we can determine their ability to make a run.

Maile was the POY (Player of the Year) in the Ninth as a Sophomore and as a Junior. And Liggett?

Comeon, Liggett is a very good catcher but sorry, he is not in the same class as Maile....and as I said, that isn't a knock on Liggett at all.....

Did you not see the throw that Maile made against HHS Friday that sent Head back to the bench? No other catcher in the Ninth makes that throw to get one of the fastest guy's on the HHS football team out at second base!

Right but everytime Maile goes up against another catcher are you seriously going to make the comment on him being in another class? I mean, we all know Maile is a good catcher, but saying how he is leagues ahead than every catcher will get old quickly. Liggett did a fine job and thats all that needs to be said.

And I also think it's a stretch to say for sure no one else could make that throw.

And I agree with Clyde, it's too early to see what this team can really do. Based on the way they've been hitting the first two games, I'd say it can only go up from here. They've done okay, but I know Maile, Darner and Isler can hit a lot better as the season goes on...I'm more worried about the fielding and pitching. After Isler, Nute, and Krumme I think we get weak. And as we saw last year, we need more than three solid pitchers.

Hasn't Maile been told by the Pro scouts he won't even play catch at that level?

No they haven't.

Thank you as I hadn't heard that one either. What position would you think they would have him playing? Just curious?

He's athletic enough to move to a couple different positions.

Sammy is a fine catcher and one heck of a good kid. Give him another year and maybe he makes that same throw. Keep playing hard Sammy I'll take you on my team any day.:thumb:

Fastest way to the MLB is to be a catcher (who hits) or a left hand pitcher, who can throw strikes!

I have heard that Maile will not be playing much catch in the future...who knows how accurate it is but I trust the person who I heard it from.

You've heard incorrectly.

UK has a JR now who has a strong chance to be drafted this year. None of the other catchers on the roster have stepped up to take the job next year.

Luke will get every opportunity to be the starting catcher on Day 1.

Now, if Niddifer comes back that changes things. I'd then expect to see Luke get time as a DH/1B.

I can't see him coming back, and from the looks of their team Luke should be the starting catcher. Although, there will be another guy or two in the hunt at first. I think Farris is going to stay in the outfield though.

As I said, I trust the person who told me. They don't typically spew out false information, but whatever happens I'm sure Luke will do fine at UK next year.
