JV games get one umpire.

It doesn't help any when the umpires are paid to do 2 games and spend 30 minutes at their cars between games, knowing that they will only get 3 innings in. As far as the game that this thread is about. I was told that the home plate umpire from the first game (that was suppossed to be in the field) was sitting in the stands, taking it all in.

 

I have no idea of the umpire situation but we only had one umpire for JV this week and then two for our Varsity. Maybe he was only paid for one game.

I should have been more clear. I think all of Cooper's 9th region games are home and away.

Agree. But that is the norm here in the 9th for JV games to have only one umpire. In fact, other than the JV tournament, I'm not sure I've ever seen a two-man crew for JV games. While it could very well be due to not having a large enough umpire staff in the 9th (they had some serious problems number-wise two years ago), it is probably moreso due to a cost savings.

To get back to the point of the thread....I was told that the pitchers for Boone looked tough and that their lead off guy may be one of the fastest in the state. I didn't get any names, but they said that Boone has a solid team.

The 9th Region is shortchanging the kids by using only one umpire who can't make a call at second. That is ridiculous to have only one umpire for a JV game. And, if you use just one umpire they should call the game from behind the pitcher.

Was it against small schools with players that play both V and JV?

 

Honestly, can't remember... Although I do know when Coach Meeks was coaching JV he liked playing night games under the lights, so that could be why.

Boone in general is a very quick team this year. Especially at the top of the order. Lokesak runs a 6.5 60yd dash while Cotton runs a 6.8 6.9 in the 60. Boths times are legitimate times. Lokesak played on the Bluegrass Chiefs this past summer and set a club record with 46 stolen bases out of 53 attempts. Lokesaks times came from the Cincinnati Steam , Morehead, Eastern Kentucky and Missouri camps. Cottons came from the Bluegrass tryouts this past fall. Both of these guys have the green light to go at any time..and why not? Nate Alford has good speed as does Sciamanna and Carroll. The key is getting on base. Boone has a few pitching prospects as well with some young arms showing some promise but its too early to tell just how they will progress through the season. However, the picture looks much better than originally thought! This team seems at this early stage in the game to play well together. Defensively, it appears Boone has made some adjustments in the infeild to compensate for last years graduations. Carroll is stepping in quite nicely at Short Stop and Nick Hummerick at second base.

Agreed! Playing time at the JV and Freshman level is more important. You have to swings at the plate and time in the feild.
