I didn't see the play, so I don't know exactly what the batter-runner was doing. But it is entirely possible that a batter would hold up from advancing towards 2B if he saw a situation in which the runner in front of him that was rounding 2B was obstructed and was not going to reach 3B. It is totally the umpire's discretion to place the runners - ALL runners, not just the one obstructed, as his obstruction could affect other runners - at the base he feels they would have reached had the obstruction not occurred. Did that apply in this situation? I don't know. Perhaps not. But it's entirely possible.

I never did understand why teams would have the V travel and JV stay home and vice versa. Why have 2 schools travel when you can just have 1 travel. I like the idea of playing the V first and then letting the JV play 5 after or as many as they can if the team doesn't have lights. It just makes more sense to me, especially when schools are trying to find ways to cut costs by have just one team traveling.

It just makes more sense to me, especially when schools are trying to find ways to cut costs by have just one team traveling.

 

Early in the season when you're limited on daylight, the JV would oftentimes be very lucky to get in 5 innings. In a game like Pendleton vs. Boone, what would be the earliest that Pendleton could be at Boone's field ready to play? Maybe 4:15? If the game doesn't end until 6:15 (or perhaps even later, as high school games often do), then the JV would be lucky to play an hour. Seems like an awful lot of travel for the players and their families to see them play a couple of innings at most. There's not many high school fields around here that have lights that I'm aware of.

Keep in mind traveling in the ninth is a bit different than most of the state(except lou. and lex.). Most schools are very close and travel is not much an issue. If Boone plays Dixie for example it is about a 15 min drive between schools.

I can remember playing about 7 or 8 JV GAMES total in the mid-nineties for Harrison and I don't think it short-changed our development, especially in the late nineties.

Maybe its just a 9th region thing. As someone said the schools are so close that travel is not an issue. Off the top of my head from where I live I can probably be at 95% of the 9th region schools in less than 25 minutes.

It doesn't help any when the umpires are paid to do 2 games and spend 30 minutes at their cars between games, knowing that they will only get 3 innings in. As far as the game that this thread is about. I was told that the home plate umpire from the first game (that was suppossed to be in the field) was sitting in the stands, taking it all in.

Often but not always. Remember that most if not all NKY teams also have freshman teams that they have to schedule games for.

 

I should have been more clear. I think all of Cooper's 9th region games are home and away.
