My Bright Idea for the NIT

Ok basketball fans, I have been brainstorming a little and expanded on my little NIT plan. I would like to hear everyone's thoughts and would particularly like to hear your thoughts on advantages and disadvantages of such a plan. Hopefully, we can have an insightful basketball discussion:

My Bright Idea for the NIT

I have been pondering a way to make the National Invitational Tournament actually mean something. The way things are currently, the NIT invites 32 teams that the NCAA Tournament closed the door on. For the true basketball junkie or dedicated fan, it is still an interesting tournament albeit a far cry from the Big Dance. Outside that circle of basketball crazies, however, the NIT goes on barely noticed.

As a Kentucky Wildcat fan, I have never spent a great deal of time being concerned about anything other than the NCAA Tournament. That thought process has shifted a little this season as the Wildcats have had a very discouraging season and will find themselves hosting an NIT game tomorrow night. Like any True Blue fan would do, I started developing ways that would have still given Kentucky a chance to make the Big Dance. I came up with this little plan that would serve a dual purpose. First, it would make the NIT interesting and give it some validity and value. Secondly, it would leave me with a little hope and give my Cats another opportunity to make the NCAA tourney.

Here is my Einstein-esque plan

Is this really your idea, or just a plug for your blog? :D

Really though, I quit reading it after your idea of cutting out the final 4 teams in the Big Dance. I'll read the full thing tomorrow, but I'll just let you know that they're never going to take 4 teams out of the Big Dance to help the NIT...

Yes. :thumb:

I know this would never happen in a million years, but I thought it would make for some interesting discussion :thumb:

Reasons why?
1. The one-week delay in the NCAA tournament.

2. The NIT just becomes another part of the NCAA tournament, and the NIT will never go for it. The NIT has earned its place in college basketball ... let it be its own entity.

3. The BCS teams get enough of a break as it is in at-large selections ... no reason to give them another one. Playing so many games in a short span of time favors a team with depth, which is more likely to be an advantage to the BCS schools.

Those are all valid points. I had already thought of #1. I can definately see your points on 2 and 3, as well. Do you mind if I add those to the disadvantages on my article?

I say have the NIT Champ get a bid. Wasn't it at one time many teams wanted to win both the NIT and NCAA? I could've swore UK tried that at one time.

I do believe that I read that Kentucky won both titles before or maybe they lost the NIT and won the NCAA. Something along those lines. I think a team that pulls it together and wins the NIT would be playing pretty decent basketball and probably win a game or two in the NCAA's.

It would be interesting to see that happen. It should be considered a tourny but not where you put four seeds in. Give it to the NIT Champion.

I like this idea as long as they aren't put as a #16 seed, just because I think think the #1's have earned that easier game and putting a difficult team in there could change the entire tournament. I like putting the final ones as a 10,11,13,13 seeds.
