So, just like in little league, hide'em in right field or put them at third and hope they don't get killed. We need the better kids everywhere else?

 

I'm sure this last line must be a rhetorical question. The higher the level the play, every position is important. At some positions maybe more plays are made?

I would say Catcher or SS.

As a former umpire, I can promise you that there is no better than a good pitcher who hits his spots and an excellent catcher who keeps everything in front and you safe behind. Therefore, I say pitching and catching, the rest you can fill in.

I like speed.

I think an argument can be made for any of the up the middle positions. However, a good catcher can make up for mistakes or weaknesses in many other positions. Watching a GREAT catcher who can lead and work like music back there - FABULOUS stuff!!

You have to have pitching and catching. After that depends on what you call "good" defense, do you just mean glove work, or cannon for an arm, range, intelligence? Each position needs certain qualities. Someone said earlier that you have to be strong up the middle, well if you're weak on the corners you won't win many games. You need a cannon in right field and speed in center. But it all starts and ends with pitching and catching in my book. You can win if you're strong there.
