8th Region boys coach of the year

Recommended Posts

One month done, two to go. Who's the coach who's most deserving of the Coach of the Year award SO FAR?

I'll make a few nominations to get started...

Ron Kinmon, Grant County - Already has as many wins (11) as last year. Really has this group believing that they will contend in March.

Jason Holland, Henry County - The Wildcats went 7-19 last year...they're 12-3 this year. They're thinking big in New Castle...

Bob Lauster, Trimble County - Has turned one of the smallest schools in the 8th into a competitive program. Although his team is 5-7, they are playing smart, competititve basketball, despite an overall lack of size.

Gary Forrest, Oldham County - it's trendy to overlook the coaching jobs being done by coaches at the bigger schools, assuming that they have "all the advantages". But Forrest, who's in his 21st year at Oldham, may be doing one of the best coaching jobs of his Hall of Fame career. His 8-4 Colonels have almost no size (tallest starter is 6'3") and little experience.

Of course, time will tell how these teams fare for the season...but these four coaches stand out right now...

With all due respect to Coach Holland and his team, based on their schedule, i can not fathom giving consideration for Coach of the Year. Coach Holland does a great job with his program, there is no denying that. My vote at this point goes to Glen Drury at Anderson County.

Call me a homer but I think when its all said and done Carroll Yager will have the most improved team from last year. Do not be fooled by the record then or now. Wins and losses do not always tell the story due to the fact that there are alot of things that need to be undone from years past. We did have a couple of nice wins early and lost some games we could have won. Hopefully some of our tough losses will prepare us come tournament time. I know that is an over used expression but the mentality of this team will be changed for the better. Whether this success will translate into coach of the year or not remains to be seen. Hats off to the other coaches mentioned as well.:thumb:

My apologies to Coach Yager. I actually forgot about him. I agree with you on Coach Yager.

I didn't mention Coach Yeager of Carroll because I haven't met him yet or seen his team. I will later this year...

Glen Drury is one of my favorites and does a fantastic job year in and year out...but for me to pick him as COY right now would be hard, because Anderson is SUPPOSED to be 8-3 right now. They're so talented, Glen probably will have to win the region to earn the award, whether fair or not...anything less will be viewed as a disappointment in Lawrenceburg.

I realize Henry doesn't have a signature victory yet...but it's still noteworthy that they've won 12 games in barely a month. Big improvement for HC. If they compete well vs. Owen, Anderson, and Grant - the three biggies on their schedule - I would say a strong case could be made for Coach Holland. Note that they've already beaten Owen and lost by just one to Gallatin in OT (yes, I know Maddox was injured)

There was a 5th coach I meant to include and forgot.

Stacey May of Williamstown has his team sitting at 5-5 - already eclipsing last year's 4 win season and more than half as many wins as the school has won in total over the last 3 years - and owns a 16 point win over Carroll. Their last game was a mere 4 point loss to Grant. Gotta keep an eye on Coach May, IMO.

Not saying Coach Yager is not doing a good job, but if this was last year the fans would have been calling for coach Miller's head.

Even though this post really isn't about the wins and losses -- Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe the previous coach and teams won a total of 6 or 7 games last year and the year before. This team has made tremendous strides this year both in their play and conduct on the court. There is still a lot of ball to play and again I think the Panthers have already won 6 games this year, two or three of which would be considered big wins for CC. As Redsfan stated there is a lot to be "undone" from the past 3-4 years and it will not be undone overnight.

Keep up the good work Coach Yeager, staff and players.

Ron Kinmon (Grant County) has done more with his talent than any coach in the 8th. He has taken a group of kids who have lost for years and turned them into winners. I believe they have the most wins (12) in the region and are on top in their district. In my book, this is a no-brainer.

He is definitely a front-runner IMO. They are a fun team to watch!

You are completely wrong, CC has as many wins already as last year and surpassed the previous year. The best thing is that we are competitive with every team that we play.

The biggest difference is that we have a Coach that is building the program at all levels. He is also a very good example for all of those boys that are on the team and CC is very lucky to have him.
