Girl sues coach/school for getting hurt

Featured Replies

An interesting article in regards to an Ohio girl who is suing her coach/school for being hurt in a scrimmage against boys/men.

Here's a link to the story in the Enquirer.

Thoughts?

IMO this could open up a big can of worms, because a lot of girls programs practice against males! (right or wrong)

In 8th grade our boys basketball team would always scrimmage against the Varsity girls at Boone County. Also men practice against NKU Women's basketball team as well.

Sounds like someone is trying to make a buck over a complete accident.

But if this wins, don't you think the precedent set will change the landscape of girls practicing with boys? As a coach, makes me think twice about it!

I think it will definitely change, which I think is unfortunate. I think that practicing against guys can be a big benefit for some teams.

At Transy, the Girls coach often brings in guys to practice against his team. It helps them out a lot IMO.

The article mentioned she played against male students and other men and that it was not adequately supervised. Playing against male students from your school is one thing... playing against other men that are not students is asking for a law suit. STUPID.

Don't really think its any different IMO. The students were probably more athletic than the non students as they were probably in shape. It would be more likely an injury would occur against the more athletic group

Same at U.K.

Some subs on women's teams have tried to get the practice of men scrimmaging against the women's team banned. The spokesman for the players who wanted it banned claimed that while the starters scrimmaged the men, the subs sat and watched thus not getting the chance to practice and improve. I never heard how it turned out.

I think the KHSAA sent out a memo a couple of years back that stated any high school girls team that scrimmaged against other high school males could be found in violation of the scrimmage rules. I think this practice has been discontinued at most schools.

I know when I was in high school as a freshman we played a game against our girls team (they were REALLY mean). When the ball went up in the air for the tip the girl on me smacked me between the legs while everybody was looking up. The girl they had jumping was about 6'4 and whipped one boy in our class so bad he was crying.

I know girls coaches that strongly encourage playing boys to get better.

This is totally against KHSAA rules, if you practice against someone that is not eligible to be on your roster it counts as a scrimmage, of which you cannot have a scrimmage after the season starts!

Good thing this didn't happen in Kentucky.....

Did I miss where it said in the article what the nature of her injury was? Also, it's interesting to note that she made the All Star honorable mention list the following year.
