Beechwood Freshman 2008

Featured Replies

Since there is a thread like this on Highlands and Beechwood beat them for the NKY Freshman Championship maybe we need to do this for the Tigers.

The 1A State Champions lost a lot of seniors. Who from this class will help fill the losses by left by them.

First, congrats to this year's Beechwood freshmen for winning the Freshman Championship. That is quite a feat considering this involved all freshman classes in N. Ky. from 6A on down. They not only won but they weren't significantly challenged by anyone all year.

That being said, Beechwood usually doesn't play many sophomores so even though the freshman team was great, playing time will not come easily. Next year's senior class only has 8 players. they are all quality players who will start but those low numbers led to 4 current sophomores getting key minutes this year. The current sophomore class does have pretty good numbers so it may be difficult for next year's sophomores (current freshmen) to equal that number of 4.

As to the current freshmen, Joe Staten is the only position player that saw minutes in this year's playoffs so I would say it is a good bet he will see playing time next year at perhaps LB or even FB. Joey Nussbaum will almost surely be the kicker. The way Cameron Vocke dominated at times in freshman ball, you have to think he will see key minutes. Jake Kremer looks to be physically capable right now of handling varsity action. Beyond that, there is definitely more talent but growth and hard work in the off season will determine if anyone else gets significant playing time.

Not to get off topic, but as good as this year's freshman team was, next year's may be just as good. There is a LOT of talent in next year's freshman class. Beechwood's prospects for continued success in football look brighter than ever.

Congratulations to the Tigers for their Freshman Championship. As a Highlands fan I was very impressed with their team. Several players were excellant football players and should be standouts at the varsity .

I cant wait until 2008 when maybe the JV Tigers and the JV Bluebirds play.

Those standout players were Staten, Vocke and Kremer just to mention a few. I also saw the NCC and Beechwood game in addition to the Beechwood and Highlands Championship game. Good Luck in 2009

I would think that some of those boys would be worked in on speciality teams. I realize that isn't 'starting' or even significant playing time; however, it is valuable playing time IMO. Some names for specialities could be Cruse, Everett, Brilz, Lawless, Flannery, Verkamp, Breyley, Greenweiler, etc. Again, that all depends on growth and off season workouts.

Staten was a stud and will definitely be starting next season somewhere on the field. Mark that down.

Nussbaum has a nice foot and will most likely boot. I thought the QB was very athletic as well and could see a spot somewhere on the field or atleast be the backup next season.

Vocke should be returning punts or something, he has swivel hips and great acceleration.

Good luck to those boys and keep working hard in the weightroom.

The best chance for the sophomores getting special teams playing time is on kickoff coverage and returns. Speed is the name of the game there so the fast guys have chance to get varsity action.

Imagine that? A Nussbaum at Beechwood who can kick!! :D Which one's son is Joey?

Joey is Gary's son.

Get ready for a steady diet of Nussbaums over the next few years at Beechwood. Gary has three sons coming through so there will likely be a Nussbaum on the team for the next 6 or 7 years.

Is there some kind of kicking DNA they took shots of in that family? :D

If you have been over to Beechwood's football field on any given evening watching Gary sit in his lawn chair and 3 brothers kicking and shagging balls is quite a sight.

Joey, Max and Chad

I don't see Davis[freshman qb this year] being the backup seeing Rigdon is a senior next year and this years back up[colosimo] being a junior next year maybe they will find him a new position:thumb:

Wouldn't that decision be based more on athleticism and the ability to do the job and not on what grade a player is in? For small programs like Beechwood, from one season to the next players will find themselves in different positions based on the needs of the team at that time. A tight end one year may have to play QB, tackle or fullback the next season. If the incoming sophomores work hard in the off season a number of them will see considerable time on the field next season at whatever position they can help the team the most.

Good point! The Freshman QB two years ago was moved to defensive end and maybe wideout (or tight end) last year. He is a goo QB too. They move them around at this level very often.
