A bit of a surprise to me also, if for no other reason than enrollment size. Here are the '06-'07 average enrollments per the KHSAA:

Rowan County 971

Ashland 962

Boyd County 948

Greenup County 936

East Carter 739

Fleming County 739

Lewis County 698

West Carter 686

Morgan County 674

Russell 664

Bath County 591

Menifee County 334

Elliott County 332

Raceland 312

Fairview 285

Rose Hill 78

Two interesting notes: Russell ranks 10th in enrollment and how is Bath still an All A participant at 591 students?

Which school has the highest enrollment. Is it Rowan, Boyd, Greenup, or Ashland?

IF I remember correctly....................Class "A" classification is locked in for two years at a time. It is very possible that Bath County was under the limit the previous season when the totals were declared and over this season. I think that when West Carter played their final year in the Class "A" they were actually over the limit as well.

Bath County is not 1A. In football Bath County is 2A. I think for the purpose of the All A, there are several teams, that are 2A in football, that play in the All A tournament.

Someone will have to help me, but I think there is a certain number of teams allowed in the All A, and that number is the smallest schools in the state, not necessarily all 1A football teams. There are 41 1A football programs in the state and several other basketball playing schools that would be 1A if they played football. I think there are 64 teams in the All A, and some of the smaller 2A football schools are included in the 64 smallest schools in the state.

As a sidenote, Henry Co is 3A football, but will play in the All "A" this year.

Ok, now my argument is out the window.:D

I counted 109 schools on the All A Basketball listing. I believe there are somewhere around 270 HS in the state that compete in basketball. That would be 40% of the teams in KY are in the All A tournament. Tells me that 109 teams includes both Class A and Class AA football schools. 2 of 5 football classes is exactly 40% and I just passed the math test.

You did see my post above about Henry Co, a 3A school in football being an All "A" basketball team, right? There are 6 football classes, not 5. Also, not all football classes have equal numbers of teams in them.

You are correct> Sorry, I was thinking back in the not so distant past when we had 5 classes vs. 6 classes. My point being that I was surprised that somewhere around 40% of the HS are in the All A Basketball Tourney. If guessing before hand I would have thought it to be somewhere around 25%.

For football playing schools:

1A has 41 programs.

2A has 33 programs.

3A has 40 programs.

There are some schools, like Elliott County that would be 1A, but does not have a football program, but 109 teams sounds like a lot to be in the All A. I am a little surprised.

Guess true blue and gold is correct. The All A Basketball teams must go much deeper into the 3A football schools by sheer numbers being over 100.

I don't off the top of my head know the enrollment criteria for 2A vs. 3A football and then the criteria for All A Basketball. Guessing the All A Basketball number would be somwhere around 700 or less?? 2A football number being 600 tops and 3A number being 800 tops?? Again, just guesses maybe someone knows the exact numbers??

With these numbers, Rowan County, Greenup County, Boyd County, and East Carter are 4A, Ashland is 5A, Lewis County, Russell, Fleming, and Morgan are 3A, Bath County is 2A, Raceland and Fairview are 1A. Rose Hill, Menifee County and Elliott would be 1A.
