They do have some talent but really only based on their age/grade level. Their varsity team, being made up of girls who would at most schools being playing JV or freshman ball, would probably do well playing other JV or freshmen teams. They just don't have the experience at such a young age to run with the big girls if you ask me. In a few years they should be doing well. It's just a rebuilding year for them and it shouldn't be a surprise to anyone knowing what they lost last year.

 

You know those 3 that just graduated played with the big dogs at the same age and it worked out for them.

Wow. Saw Lewis County scrimmage some teams this summer and based on that, would not have expected them to beat Mason County.

 

Let's be honest though.

 

Mason did lose a lot of talent last year. But that talent was making them one of the top two teams in the 10th region. Mason County should never lose enough talent that takes them to potention regional winners to 0-7.

 

If they did where was any player development at the freshmen and JV level the past two years?

 

Was there simply NO TALENT in those classes the past two years?

 

It seems very hard to believe that 3 players means that they go from being #2 in the region to can't win a game. THey lost enough talent that I would not have expected them to sniff the top 5 in the region position. But I am shocked that they have not won a game.

I said the exact same things weeks ago. Mason County should never have a winless anything. Find it hard to believe several classes were never developed to where they have to rely on middle schoolers. This may happen at smaller schools, but shouldn't with girls and boys basketball tradition that Mason has.

The Big 3 played most games in routs. Bench players were mostly that, relegated to the bench, even in blowouts. Alot of players just wont put the time in if they arent gonna play in games. Coach Buser didnt do a very good job on the development end.

Congrats to Lewis county. Another loss for Mason county but they are getting better each time out. Could just as easily be 5-2. Expect them to be a dangerous team by season's end.

No Mason County team has never started 0-7. In 1990, the Lady Royals started 0-5 which was their worst start.

After seeing some of the posts in this thread, I'll shed a little light on this subject. First and foremost the reason their wasn't any juniors on last years team and no seniors on this years team was because the girls that started at the 6th grade level (15 of them-I have a team pictue and my youngest daughter played through middle school) and their parents saw how the program was ran and between 6th and 10th grade, all 15 quit for various reasons. The program had 15 in the 6th grade, 15 in the 7th, 13 in the 8th, 4 in the 9th, and one played as a sophmore. Now we all know that players quit for varios reasons, especially on the girls side because of varying changes in personality and going from girls to young women. Now some of them quit because of playing time as usual, but the majority said they were not playing for Paula Buser and the other coaches. Now coaches get bashed all the time on here and they don't deserve it. But when you lose 15 girls out of one class and and you refuse to look in the mirror at yourself at what you can do to better things, but instead blame the parents for meddling in the program and the players for not being as good as she thought she should have, you deserve what you get. I had a retired coach from the 10th region hall of fame tell me that when you have problems of the magnitude she was having in keeping upper classmen, not looking in the mirror to see if you are part of the problem, and if you keep pulling the unripened fruit from the tree(his words refering to middle schoolers) you will kill the tree that that bears the most fruit.

That was a nice post. I could have typed almost the exact same thing pertaining to Fleming Co. I know they work really hard and I don't want to be too critical, but people that are not in the know would be shocked at the number of players and talent etc... that played in middle school/aau... In the last several years... that have since quit. Even though there are always some promising young talent on the horizon you cannot constantly keep knocking everyone else aside and pick faves without at some point hurting the program.

Thanks Snapper. Not knowing the situation at Fleming Co. I can only comment on what I know or what I see and witness and try to make intelligent, common sense responses to what I witnessed. Though I do not care for the foot stomping, and crying about every little call on the floor, she acts like Billy Hicks at times, I do like Orem's fire, and intensity, and she did have a relationship with players beyond basketball. Coaching girls is alot different than coaching boys, you not only have to know and teach the game of basketball to them in the correct manor, but you have to be a mother to some, a big sister to some, or just a friend, or just a teacher. It takes a very special person to be all those things, and Cristy is alot more to her players in that respect, than Paula Buser was ever to any of her players. My daughter called home one day during a summer camp at Lexington Catholic and said all 8 players that traveled on the varsity were in tears and wanted to quit because of her this included the the 3 that graduated last year. They stayed because of their love of the game, their chance to go to college, and their love of each other, not because of their love of the coach or their love for Mason Co. to a certain extent. Coach Buser was fired from Fleming Co. for the very same things that were allowed to happen and were tolerated through her entire tenure at Mason Co. by the AD and administration. Here is one final story and food for thought how things were done and will leave my soap box for awhile. My daughter's senior year, we played Bracken Co. at home in Maysville, because of fouls and somewhat the score, she played over half the game off the bench, scored 12 pts. and could haved scored over 20 if she hadn't missed some FT's, 2 layups, and a 3. She had 10 plus rebounds, had a double double, and was player of the game on the radio. She drew praises from her coach, then in the very next game against Clark Co. she never even got to play. Try to justify that to the player, her teammates, parents, and fans. That's why I won;t make an effort to go watch any girls games. It'll be a long time before that taste is out of my mouth.

Another good post! I don't know alot about the Mason Co. situation you talk about but I agree with much of what you have to say. I know the Fleming Co. staff and the girls work very very hard. I just think you should try to foster groups of girls instead of always pulling up young ones. You are right though, girls are different. They have alot going on and many quit for various reasons or just lose interest. I guess if you get one or two that does not get burnt out from being pushed hard early you have to stick with them and develop their talent. In reality the two situations seem quite different, I know our coach cares alot about her players. I simply like to see Fleming Co. compete well in all sports and it seems like we are always rebuilding or wait until next year etc...
