To continue the subject, each year we had a pre-season meeting with the coaching staff, parents and players and the head coach went over the rules,what was expected as players, parents, etc. I knew most of the support staff personally so I know what was said in the locker room was true because it was confirmed by the players and there was one young lady who transfered in and earned a scholarship to Berea. She was so intense she took losing and making mistakes really hard, Coach Buser was quoted " I've been doing this for over 20 yrs., I'am not going to baby anybody or change how I do it." Well, this is ok if you're successfull at what your doing. From her head coaching record at Fleming and Mason Cos. she wasn't successfull. And I don't consider winning all those district titles as being successfull because you were expected to do it anyway because Mason Co. is the big dog on the porch and we had the most team talent during the last 6 yrs. But to go back to her statement about not changing, if you can't be open to new ideas, changing how you handle individuals on a per case basis, and listen to members of your staff, then your going to reap what you sow. Unfortunately Coach Butcher is reaping what someone else sowed. And from what I have heard he is trying to change the atmosphere that was present in the past and I applaud him for that. The only thing I would have liked to see is the assistant coaches being changed. Now I know this isn't college or the pros, but when there are problems, sometimes you got to start fresh, and keeping the all the assistants from the previous coach imo isn't good, especially since one players father is an assistant and one has a niece who plays. Regardless of the players ability or potential ability, this program doesn't need anything that even resembles any type of favoritism.

Just to reply to the end of big royal daddys post theres always going to be favoritism involved, it happens at every school including Mason Co. Even if they brought new assistants I really dont think it would change. But from what im told and ive heard the assistant with the neice on the team is actually a good player and likely one of the future impact players of this team to come for many years down the road.

Yes she is and if she stays healthy,and keeps playing sports which she probably will, she should be a very excellent ballplayer, I just feel that the less parents and relatives are involved in the actual running of the team or program the better off the team and players will be. They are the ones who suffer the most in bad situations, not the adults. So you try to alieviate as many potential problems from the start. There will always be situations that can't be avoided, but when you can, do it.

I def agree with you 110% about keeping parents etc out of the running of a team and it doesnt hurt them it always comes back on the player which isnt fair. I feel this team will benefit from a new head coach and find themselves this year and with no seniors and gaining experince will be a team no one wants to play next year. Theres no doubt about it their going to take their lumps this year, although i feel their record doesnt show for their improvement.

You didnt see Feldhaus dipping down into middle school to field a team. In my opinion when a school the size of Mason or Fleming has to look to 7th and 8th graders to play varsity ball, then the head coach isnt doing their job. There should never be a varsity team without 2 or 3 seniors on the team.

To piggy back off this i agree. If you look at the boys teams from mason co although talent wise each senior class might not be as good as the ones before them they have never had to do this. They always reload and have players step in immediatley to fill the holes of those left by the seniors depatures. Thats why i believe if you dont build the system up starting with the fourth and fifth graders aka have a farm system then your going to run into these problems and when you do its not going to be pleasent at all, as we see in this case!

Like I said previously, some situations can't be avoided, and it's my fault for not saying it previously, sometimes things actually work out in this type of situation, like Coach Feldhaus. But when he took over in 75-76, things were pretty bad at Mason Co. and if hadn't turned the program around, his boys wouldn't have played maybe 1 or 2 yrs. and Deron might not have even played at all around here. But luckily everything worked out. A big difference back then was the administration wanted a good coach, not a bunch of yes men who will follow the company line so to speak. He was his own man and probably wouldn't put with this current bunch in charge. Just ask Mark Starnes why he was passed over. Besides back then girls athletics was just getting started and now after 30 yrs. and the success of the boys basketball and football program puts more pressure on the girls programs to be successfull and if you don't have the right people in charge, then people like Coach Butcher wind up with a team that is lacking in physical, mental, and basketball IQ's, that you would have with juniors and seniors.
