The 8th Region Champs go to Grant Tuesday 12/16. Grant coming off win against South Oldham while Shelby comes off tough loss against Eastern. Predictions/Thoughts?

Shelby's not as bad as their record...they've played a brutal early schedule...but Ron Kinmon's Braves are playing splendidly. South helped them out a bit on Saturday with unbelievably bad shooting, but make no mistake - this is a poised, veteran, SOLID Braves team and they are a deserving 4-0.

 

A couple of scores on the Braves' resume cause pause, however, especially the narrow victory over Ludlow. Shelby's going to present another challenge pace-wise...and South had first half success against the Braves, with an aggressive full-court press and attack...

 

I think the Braves can win this one - and it would be a huge boost for them in a season they should emerge as an 8th Region contender. But if I had to make a pick, my head says that Shelby should be a slight favorite in this one.

I'm not sure that GC has a true home court advantage. There is really a lack of atmosphere in GC's gym. There's no band, few cheerleaders, and a lack of excitement.

I think part of that is due to the weird wall behind the lower level bleachers. You only have about 7 rows of bleachers next to the floor, then you have the big blank wall between the lower level and the upper level. Creates a real dis-connect between the two sets of fans. My understanding from the AD when they built the new gym is that there was a screw-up on the part of the contractor, and that wall became taller than it should have been (maybe it shouldn't have been there at all) due to the mistake. I think they had to raise the ceiling in the locker rooms beneath the stands to fit in piping or something like that...

 

About the pep band...that's been a gripe of mine over the past few years. More and more schools don't have pep bands at most games. In my day (1970s), the pep band was at every home boys game and many of the girls games. It was part of the HS experience!!! But I'm seeing more and more games without pep bands...tape-recorded national anthems...even tape-recorded school fight songs!!!! At Oldham County, you hardly ever see a pep band anymore, except during the tournaments. Ditto at South Oldham. It's sad.

 

It's especially disheartening to note that Oldham, South Oldham, and Grant County are three of the largest teams in the region.

:thumb: In Henry County we NEVER see the pep band unless it is Homecoming or something. I think all schools need to have there pep bands. When I played the pep band made the atmosphere that much better.

I was actually in pep band when I was in school (trumpet). We had a blast - and it made a big difference in how the crowd was involved.

 

It also brought a few more fans and put them in the stands...a lot of pep band parents came to the games...

Best players graduated; some youth - I hear Mike Clark's playing an 8th grader quite a bit(?) - and a brutal schedule to start the season.

 

The movers and shakers on Shelby's team last year were Coty Minnis and Alex Matthews, and without them, this team is still looking for its leader, I think.

I would disagree by the SK game. The student section was larger than most un-organized student sections (i.e. CovCath) but the pepband, I agree. The cheerleading thing is weird too. It seems either no cheerleaders or the JV. That's odd. But I do think they have a homecourt advantage. :jump:
