CovCath cut it to 3 very late in the game, but outscored 6 - 0 in the final minute.

CCH was down by only 3 with less than a minute to play, but self-destructed a bit.

LexCath is paper thin in depth this year. The game wouldn't have been close if not for missed free throws at the end. Three straight misses on the front end of a one and one can ruin one's day. CovCath took advantage of Knight's brain freeze at the end which is to their credit. We're lucky to have one.

I could have told you watching LexCath before the game that it would be close. It was very obvious that both teams didn't have much depth.

 

Botkin can shoot and Sanford can sure finish, but what's new. Maile was a monster. CovCath has had problems with LexCath's press for years now.

 

Good game to start out the year for both teams.

LexCath will have challenges this year, even though they have Sanford and Botkin. Sanford will probably average 20+ for the season. Botkin is very strong also. They also have a couple of good young kids in Martin and Schuette. However their young big men have a ways to develop.

 

Dunbar should be the clear favorite to win that district.

Covcath isn't good enough this year to rely on the 3 ball...I've said this since over the summer and tonight proved it. You'll see a lot more of those low percentages than you think.

 

From what I heard from someone at the game, the guards really killed the Colonels tonight. Too many bad passes and none could handle the press.

 

Maile had 23 points but took A LOT of shots and tried to force things a little too much. Some went in, but some didn't.

 

All in all, my source tells me neither team looked impressive and both played very sloppy. LC is lucky to get the W though. Covcath was only down 3 with 53 seconds to go and they decided to hold the ball and throw it around the perimeter for 30 seconds which led to a Vee Sanford steal and dunk to pretty much put the nail in the coffin.

Jordan Counts surprised me with some of his shot selections from behind the arc, although he did follow up two of his misses with a put back. But I am confident that the Colonel's back court will be much better this season than they showed tonight.

I have to disagree with you. I saw Covcath in both scrimmages and both times they struggled from behind the arc. Sounds like that trend continued tonight. They'll no doubt improve, but I can tell you right now, if they try to live and die the three this year, it's going to be a long night for them when they play a good team. They don't have the shooters to rely on the 3 ball.

You're correct on the 3s especially when you have players shooting them that should not be. That's the same as a TO. There are only 3 players I'd trust right now with a 3.

 

Mitch Shover only played 18 minutes. Sounds like he's still struggling physically after his gall bladder(?) surgery. It might be a while before the REAL Mitch shows up.

 

If Mitch can't be at full strength Luke is going to have to be the focal point. He'll have to have the ball in his hands when you need a bucket. I wasnt there but if he forced some shots it was probably out of necessity. Lets not bang him after one game when the team is going to struggle offensively all year. They essentially have 2 threats. With that said, they will need to get the ball in the post to open up some other avenues.
