I commend Raceland on a very good season. I, too, would have liked to have seen Raceland make it to and even win the championship game. This is a good example, though, of how difficult it is to actually do that. This may or may not have been Raceland's best team ever, but I do think it was the team with the best chance of making it to the title game since they didn't have any "powerhouses" standing in their way.

 

Raceland was clearly the best team from our area this year. I hope they can keep their success going because it is good for northeastern Kentucky football to have as many good teams as possible. It is also good for those teams to continue playing each other every year. The more competitive local rivalries the better. I wish Greenup and Boyd County could start producing good teams on a yearly basis.

 

I am starting to think, though, after years of watching area football that none of our schools will ever produce a truly dominant team on a statewide level. They are always going to run into that team from northern Kentucky, Lexington, Louisville, or southeastern Kentucky who matches or exceeds them in talent. At that point, it seems to me like it simply comes down to a couple of plays here or there.

 

I know many Raceland fans don't like hearing about Russell, but I use them as an example just because I've followed them. The 2005 team that won the state had to pull off a 2 minute drive in the 3rd round game at Newport just to send that game into overtime. Then in the overtime, they had to block an extra point to win the game by 1. They then had to have a late game interception in the semifinal game against Belfry to win that one. They could have easily lost either game. On the flip side, the 2007 Russell team dropped a late game interception against Breathitt County to lose their 3rd round game. Was the 2005 team that much better than the 2007 team? I don't think so. It was just a matter of a play or two here and there going their way. Raceland could have easily made it to the title game this year had a play or two in that LCA game have gone their way. No difference.

 

With that being said and with all of us realizing how difficult it is to go all the way, I see no reason why every fan of teams in northeastern Kentucky (particularly Ashland, Boyd County, Russell, Greenup County, and Fairview) should not have been cheering for the Rams last week. We should all support the other teams when they aren't playing our own team and when they are trying to accomplish something that would be good for the entire area.

 

Back to the original point, though! Congratulations to Raceland for a great year and best wishes on getting ready for next season. My early pick for "best team in our area" next year is Ashland...so in my opinion, Raceland will get to face the best next year right at the start of the season!

Nice post, Ryan. Not to mention a good focal point for our team and that is to realize that Ashland will not only be a very good team, but one that is very tired of hearing about the 1A Rams and the 3 game losing streak.

Thanks Ryan, and I don't think there is as much animosity between the area schools as some people wish. I know many Raceland fans were cheering Russell on during there title run and during there runner up finish. I also know that people from Greenup County did the same, and were rooting for Raceland this year.

 

You're right it take some luck to make it to, or win the Championship. Many times when you get to the Regional Championship or beyond, you meet teams that are just as good as you are, and sometimes you have to have the ball bounce in your favor a couple of times to win those games. You could easily point to a few plays in the LCA game that if one little thing happened, Raclenad could have won that game. Likewise, you could point to several little things in the regular season match up with LCA that could have given LCA that victory.

 

The Raceland/Russell game was a big game with similarly quality teams that could have ended either way, as was the Raceland/Ashland game. I think, in big games, it just comes down to what one great coach used to stress to his players. It comes down to things that people might not think about, or put much stress on.

 

In the words of Coach Bill Tom Ross, "The difference between being good and being great, is the little things. Those little things make a big difference when you are playing good teams.

The team reports to practice on Sunday and then stays in the gym and they get up for team breakfast, practice, team lunch, practice, team dinner and practice. Repeat through Wednesday night and then go home. It really unifies the team and coaching staff. I wish we'd done something like this when I went to GC.

I think one practice period may be weights, I can't tell you 100% though.

They usually have a weight lifting and special teams practice mid-day during team camp. About 45 minutes of lifting then on the field for special teams.
