November 24, 200817 yr I said IF (big if) Cassel shows he's capable of leading this team to the playoffs and beyond. Brady is 31 now. He'll be 32 at the start of next season. Let's not forget, Tom Brady became "great" when he got his opportunity after backing up another solid QB in Drew Bledsoe. I'm of the opinion that Brady (and Cassell, for that matter) is more of a system QB. Neither has the raw talent & athleticism that scouts and GM's are looking for, which is why they both went very late in the draft. Plus, the Patriots have shown that nobody is bigger than the team in year's past, with some of the players they've let go. I don't think it'll happen, I'm just saying... "System" QB's don't win 3 Super Bowls... But, what the heck is a "system" QB? Aren't all QB's in a system? The great ones accomplish great things in their system...
November 24, 200817 yr He will not be in NE anymore. He is a starting QB, not elite, but better than most in this league. Detroit, Minnisota, San Fran would be my guesses.
November 24, 200817 yr He's been a backup since high school. Stay a backup, hold the clipboard, be ready to go if needed. Really not a bad gig.

Can't say I disagree with this. Brady is the best QB in the NFL but Bledsoe was a top 5 QB back in the league as well.
November 24, 200817 yr Tom Brady a system QB?? You can't be serious! The man has won 3 Super Bowl rings....If Brady's a system QB, then so are all the other QBs in the NFL.
November 24, 200817 yr Can't say I disagree with this. Brady is the best QB in the NFL but Bledsoe was a top 5 QB back in the league as well. I don't remember him that way at all. Is that true? When Brady took over, Bledsoe was a top5 qb? I must be losing my memory.

November 24, 200817 yr I don't remember him that way at all. Is that true? When Brady took over, Bledsoe was a top5 qb? I must be losing my memory. 2000. 19th in passer rating. 1999 22nd
November 24, 200817 yr 2000. 19th in passer rating. 1999 22nd Whew, thank the Lord. I'm not looney......yet. I do remember Bledsoe with a very quick release, very nice arm, but poor decision maker. And he ran like his shoes were still in the box.
November 24, 200817 yr Brady is on a pedestal in New England that only the Red Sox can equal....I think it is safe to say New Englanders would burn Bob Craft's Patriot Place to the ground in a riot if Brady were traded, and replaced by a guy who hasn't proved much of anything yet...

As well they should...you don't get rid of a guy who may be the best QB of all-time until you know he can't come back from his injury. There's no reason to think Brady won't fully recover. Guys do it every year. However, if the Pats have the money under the cap and they aren't in a position where they have to use their franchise tag on someone else they need to keep, then I don't see why keeping Cassel for one more year just to make sure Brady is going to be OK would be such a bad move. It all comes down to whether they have the cap space and are in position to do that. If they do, then I don't think its a bad move. It can never be a bad move to improve your roster depth...but, its all about the situation the Pats are in.
November 24, 200817 yr He's been a backup since high school. Stay a backup, hold the clipboard, be ready to go if needed. Really not a bad gig. Not a bad gig...but it would be stupid to turn down significantly more money to stay in that position. If he fails as a starter, he can always return to the backup gig...he'll just have a lot more money. And, there's no doubt that he'll get a significantly bigger offer on the market than the Pats will offer...unless they go the franchise route. Then someone would have to part with 2 first rounders to get him... Additional thought...what are the rules on transition tags? Could the Pats possibly place the transition tag on him and get some compensation for him leaving? Didn't that happen with the Seahawks and Vikings regarding Steve Hutchinson?

I think that Max Starks backup tackle (now a starter due to injury) is the only player in NFL history to get the transition tag (I'm obviously only kidding, yet I doubt that there have been many). It may have been the stupidest as well.
