Bell Co. Kicker Merrick New Career PAT Recordholder

Bell's kicker Monte Merrick became the new career PAT leader for Kentucky HS football, passing Karl Heinz Williams of Trinity at 201. Merrick was 8-8 on PAT's in the rain all in first half, bringing his total to 205 and counting!

Merrick now has 250 points scored by kicking. KHSAA does not recognize this catagory. His 8-8 performance in first half of the game.....sat out second half as did all varsity players....took his totals passed Taylor Begley and others into eighth place nationally on the career NFHS record books. He needs 29 points throughout the coming playoff games to tie Shayne Graham, of Bengals, for seventh place.

What type of turf does Bell County have? It seems to have held up very well Friday night. The players uniforms look clean. Does Bell cover the field when it rains? I am very impressed at the turf by looking at the picture.

Bell does cover the field if they call for any type of rain, regardless of what many pollsters have suggeted that Bell does to the field. The field was covered Monday and the tarp not removed until Thursday evening. The field was in good shape until the second half rains came Friday night. It still is in above average condition for this time of year.

Contrary to belief they have been doing that for years. Only problem is when it rains during pre-game or gametime the field gets muddy fast. It does not drain well and it is some slick stuff.

Congrats Monte on setting a new state record those of us that have kickers as son's can admire your accomplishments and know the hard work it is to be a kicker and the work ethic that it takes.

That happens a lot. The field just doesn't drain at all Bell does its best to keep it in the best condition possible.
