What does Ashland need to do to improve in 2008/2009? What do they need to keep doing to be successful? Remember, please be constructive.

I think that this year they will be in the upper middle of the pack in the 16th. The 16th is really top heavy from what I understand with the weight coming from the 62nd district. After this year the 16th should be more balanced and a prime opportunity to begin a run of dominance by someone and Ashland can certainly be in that mix.

You mentioned the feeder system, who are the coaches at Verity this year or last year for that matter? Strong basketball knowledge? A strong middle school program is a vital asset to a good high school program.

Last year was Mullen and Harris I believe and this year is Mullen(sp?) and someone else. Don't know much about them. I was referring to the 4-6 grades as needing an overhaul. I have heard several folks share displeasure with the system.

I think that Bonner is the key for them this season. IMO, they'll go as far as he can take them. He looks to have slimmed down some since last season. Maybe I'm mistaken.

I agree he will have to carry the team. His supporting cast will have to play better than expected for them to compete every night. They do have a decent collection of players when you combine the 9 and 10 grade. They will have to develop these kids to be a region favorite in the upcoming years.

Ashland has 5-6 players who can play(Scaggs,Delaney,Bowling,Bonner,Johnson,Swift). I anticipate their issue will be the development of the ninth graders and first year players ( Withrow, Whetsel, Hunter,Hornbuckle) in order for them to be able to provide some quality depth.

Of those 6 the only players with any real experience are Bonner and Skaggs, Johnson played minutes last year and was a positive at times. The other three weren't much of a factor. I do agree that the development of the others you named will be key. I do think that Ashland will be much better in March than in December for this reason.

As for the numbers idea, there are 28 in camp with only two of them being seniors. We might be young, but I truly believe that they'll end up making some noise. The feeder system is getting an overhaul. I believe they are finally going to draft system, like JFL. This should provide more teams and more kids playing.

Did they lose anyone other than those that graduated? Weren't their #'s dissipating last season, best my feeble mind can recall?

 

I'll give the Tomcats a puncher's chance this season. They have to be efficient with the ball. In the event that they can keep from turning it over, they'll be fine. Pressure may be their foe.

I thought Scaggs played the point quite a bit at the end of last year. I think some type of modified draft system would help.

Will Ashland play run and gun or slow down ball this year? Do the Tomcats have much of a bench?

Runnin' and gunnin'. Probably use about 7 or 8 like the last couple of years.
