Obama's First Speech

Featured Replies

How about in the future in unscripted interviews you just look to see how many times he hmms and ohmmms.

He is still a better speaker than W but he does hmmm and ommmm alot.

If, in the end of his Presidency, that's the worst anyone can say, I'll consider him successful.

No, you said he did it during the debates...a lot. Can't you make up your assertion?

Making up assertions occurs a lot on here.;)

I wish I could agree with you but unfortunately he will continue to support the policy to allow 3,000 babies a day to be murdered in this country, so we know it won't be the worse thing.

Why not just watch Obama's speech again and count the uhhs for yourself? Obama is a great public speaker and he did cut down on his uhhs during the last couple of debates, but they are an integral part of his natural unscripted speech pattern. The media does not always include interjections in transcripts such as "uh uh," so your demand for proof through a transcript is a bit unreasonable, IMO, particularly considering that the raw videos are available.

I watched them the first time, so I do not see why I need to do it again. His comments flowed smoothly and he didn't "fall flat on his face" like so many predicted. Additionally, I am not the one making the assertion. The burden of proof lies with the accuser.

Again, I made mention of this in the debate threads, but none of Obama's detractors wanted to comment on it then. The passing of time hasn't changed the actual event.

True, nothing has changed with time - but if you watch Obama speak and make a conscious effort of counting his "uhs," I believe that you will be surprised. The friendly media filters the uhs out of Obama quotes.

I could not bear to count the uhs in Obama's first speech/press conference but the total in the first ten minutes exceeded 40 and that includes the prepared text. If anybody wants to check my math, please feel free to conduct your own count.

I do think he will reach across and be "very" successful. But noooo, no one believes that will happen. Surely not, kinda like those discussions you had a few months back? You know the ones, he may be this and he may be that, but "surely" ain't no way he'll be the President.

This Country will get what it deserves huh? Care to explain? Because ya know, things have been soooo good the last eight years.

Your memory is as weak as your argument. I never said Obama couldn't be president. However, I am sure I did say that he was the least qualified person to ever run as the candidate of major party. And, I did say that he was a socialist. I also called him a Marxist. But, knowing that the media was prostituting itself for him, knowing the race card would be used far more for him than against him (Who can doubt that?), knowing that Yosemite Sam was an embarrassingly weak candidate, and knowing that it was the Democrat's turn to win, I would never have said he couldn't be elected.

As for reaching across the aisle, I would recommend that the Republicans adopt a policy of seriously questioning anything he does or tries to do. He is no middle of the roader. He is still a socialist and Marxist who is, to be nice, weak on Christian absolutes.

^

Honestly, you really counted?

I honestly did. Some of the uhs are very quick and open to interpretation and others are unmistakable. Obama has a full repetoire of uhs for all occasions. I discounted a few questionable ones because I did not feel like replaying them to make the call.

 If the focus was on how many "uhs" were said and interpreting them, then I guess the speech wasn't too bad. I still haven't been able to watch it, but thanks for the link, Hoot. When I am on the "fast" computer, I will do so.

The reason that I focused on them was your challenge to produce transcripts showing the uhs in the debates. Because the uhs were most likely not transcribed and I did not have the time to watch the debates again, I decided to look at something shorter. Obviously, if you are focusing on the content of Obama's statements it is easy to overlook the uhs but that does not mean that they are not there.

I do agree that Obama seemed to really cut down on the number of uhs that he uttered during the debates because of the ridicule that he drew for some of the speeches that he made without a teleprompter.

Whatever would be true of this speech would not provide evidence of the debate. However, again, if this is the worst that we can come up with to discuss, then we are doing just fine. ;)
