The player was going for the ball. I talked to CCH's head coach who is the nicest, most honest guy on earth. If it deserved a red card, if anyone would admit it, he would and he even said he's been coaching soccer for a long time and knows 100% that it was if anything at all, a yellow card. He added if he was the referee in the regional finals against two rivals in a clean game throughout two halves and 1 full overtime, there's no way that he would have pulled the red card in this situation. And I know you're just going to say well the coach is obviously going to say that but if you take my word for anything, coach Herstenberg is the most honest, down to earth guy you'll ever meet.

However, I do not think that officals should swallow their whistles in overtime (or around the goal), both which happen routinely in soccer.

 

Agreed! The referee swallowed his whistle in the NDA / Highlands match. Two possible fouls in the box could have changed the outcome of that match!

I remember the one (everyone remembers one). I don't remember two.

 

I like everyone else thought the one should have been a PK, but I was talking to a ref after the game who defended the no call and said it was shoulder to shoulder.

I wasn't there either so I can't comment on this call.

 

But in general, the conduct of players, coaches and fans at soccer matches is out of control and the refs have a lot to do with that occurring because they have let it occur. I'm told the KHSAA is getting pretty tired of it. Trust me when I say this: there is going to be a big clamp down on aggressive play, unruly fans, and unsportsman like conduct from players and coaches. What has been permitted in the past is not going to be permitted in the future. Some will claim that they shouldn't change the rules this "late in the game". Baloney. Don't be surprised to see a lot more red cards as the tourny progresses this year and thereafter next year if conduct does not change dramatically.
