I do not believe most people feel intellectually superior to George W. Bush. Those who do feel intellectually superior to Bush, a Yale graduate and Harvard MBA, fit my definition of a liberal elitist.

I believe an Elitist is a person that feels they are superior to the majority. Be it because of money or power. John Kerry is the poster child for Elitist in my mind. Any time I hear that word that is who pops in my head (Pelois has been added to that list as of late).

 

I always think of the word Elite in a different sense. A person or group that has proven they are the best in their field would be Elite. Tiger Woods is the Elite of the PGA, the SEC is the Elite conference in college football, Brady/Manning/Palmer are amoung the Elite QB's in the NFL. The Navy Seals are an Elite fighting group, ect...

:thumb: Political elitists believe that people who disagree with them are simply ignorant of the facts. I agree that John Kerry is the ultimate liberal elitist.

 

On the right, I consider George Will, Peggy Noonan, and David Brooks good examples of Republican elitists. I agree with Rockmom that elitism is an attitude. Elitists usually do not understand the people on whose behalf they purport to speak half as well as they believe that they do.

I won't disagree, but I will point out (rather obviously) that this phenomenon didn't arise in 1999. People are hungry for someone who speaks to and relates to them. We're tired of the polished politicians blowing sunshine to trick us into trusting them so they may have more power.

Actually, I thought "socialist" was the new liberal. But you may be right. I occasionally listen to Limbaugh on the car radio at lunch, and he uses the term "elitist" (pot - meet kettle) quite a bit these days.

I could go on, but I think my point is clear: Drinking European beer, driving foreign cars, and thinking don't make a person an elitist - believing that drinking European beer, driving foreign cars, and pretending to comprehend Cicero makes a person better than the rest makes them elitist.
