Mason County 2008/09

Featured Replies

Mason finished 24-8 last year and earned a spot in the region final. What must they do to get back?

They need to get a year or two older and taller if that is anyway possible. Also they need to be better prepared defensively and fundamentally with an emphasis on bench development. Also the new coach is going to have to develop some type of team unity and chemistry that is going to filter down through the 6th, 7th, and 8th grades where the girls will want to continue with basketball once they get to high school.

Who are the main threats on the Lady Royals this year? Lost a ton of points and rebounds.

Keller Menke and Kaitlin Smith will probably be the main players that will be asked to pick-up the scoring. Emily Queen and Hillary Doyle will probably be the girls down low asked to most of the rebounding unless there are some younger kids coming up.

I think your thinking Beth Queen. Mason County will be definitely young and experience will be something that will slowly develop but don't count out these young ladies. Menke and Smith will be counted on for leadership and scoring, they both had great summers in playing. There will be a more balanced group and any one of the possible 15 kids will be thrown into the mix and counted on. You will see a solid defensive team, quicker team, and once some seasoning has grown on the girls by playing the games, you will see a more balanced group. Conditioning and weights are a great focus right now and that will definitely pay off down the road. The freshmen class is a solid group that includes 6-7 kids that are fundementally sound and know how to play the game. The middle school program is very, very solid and look for some of those kids to be contributors in the not so distant future. Mason County graduated tremendous talent and scoring a year ago, but there will be greater days just around the corner. Coach Butcher is a solid young coach that has had success prior to MCHS and one shouldn't expect anything less here in Royal land.

Yes, Beth Queen, sorry about that got the first name mixed up with the girl that played at Rose Hill I believe. I wish the girls nothing but the best this year. Hopefully, Coach Butcher can rebuild the program up to where there is a consistant mix of seniors, juniors and sophmores somewhat year in and year out.

That will be and is the key to any successful program, therefore I agree with you 100%. The fans need to get behind this program and these young ladies that are hungry for success. I think people will see a scrappy, gutsy bunch of kids as with any program that is in a rebuilding form.

Whats the scouting report on Beth Queen?
Pressrow would know better than myself, but from what little I saw of her last year she has decent size, but speed, quickness and footwork need improvement along with a little self-confidence that will probably come with her getting older and hopefully being in stilled by the coach.

Queen came to Mason County a couple years ago, really has been limited to action due to a knee injury. Saw limited action last year, has pretty decent range on the shot, strong upper body and will be looked at to play a larger role this year as she is one of three juniors. Foot speed, conditioning will be key as she does have some upside to her offensively.

There are posters here who are pretty close to the program and know of what they speak. Mason County's middle school program is very solid. It will in all probability take some time for everything to gel.

I would be surprised if the 2008-09 Lady Royals are a quicker team overall than last year's squad. Chambers and Cline were both very quick. Of their combined 5,500 or so career points, I would love to know how many were scored on runouts.

This group, with lots of new faces, including the coach, will be very interesting to watch!

Where did she transfer from?

Eastern Brown, OH. Played for Coach Kiser.

Good Luck to Coach Butcher and the Lady Royals!
