Whitley County 54 North Laurel 21

Featured Replies

I thought that Whitley came out and did pretty much what they wanted when they wanted and there was not a lot that North could do to stop them. At the start of the second half, North did stop them and then went and scored, but then Whitley regained their intensity and put a couple of more in the endzone. In the future they can't have a let down at any time, but honestly it is hard to maintain the level of intensity that they had in the first half, when you are physically dominating a team like they were, but they did a good job of regaining it when North scored.

You are right that is what he said in the Times Tribune, but what he said in the Corbin News Journal is that he looked forward to playing Whitley becuase they ran the ball and that was what North was know for, stopping the run. In fact some of the fans even stated that they thought it would be a feast. Go buy one or look it up on line if they have the between the lines posted on the internet. So yeah he did call them out and they responded.

I am sure that he said he respected the Whitley fullback AFTER the game, especially after he had just run all over his team at will.

What fans said it would be a feast? Now I know what the banners meant, but not sure where those comments came from.

Sounds like to me that a certain sportswriter for the News Journal who has no love for Laurel County at all was trying to stir something up. Funny how quotes in the Sentinel Echo and the Times Tribune gave Whitley all kinds of respect but suddenly Abbott doesn't respect Whitley in the News Journal?

If you read into that interview that Abbott was 'calling out' the Whitley team, you are sadly mistaken and are making something out of nothing. Saying that Abbott 'called out' the Whitley County team is a bigtime reach. Read what he said in the Times Tribune and Sentinel Echo (if those comments are still online) and tell me how that shows Whitley anything but a lot of respect.

Like I said before, I think Whitley has to be the favorite to win the district. They were dominant and deserve all the respect in the world. But to be disrespecting a good man like Coach Abbott because some sportswriter wants to stir something up shows you know nothing about the man.

I would agree that I don't know the man. I would hope that no coach would ever say something like that because all it does is incite the opposition.

I would not agree that Whitley is the district favorite, I think that although they did dominate North, PCC will be a different story. They are the favorite, since they have already beaten the defending champ LCC.

Only time will tell.

Question:

Why did North not make any adjustments to what Whitley was doing with the fullback? It appeared that they had athletes and speed but never really made changes or tried something to stop the running game of the Colonels. The Wardrup kid is a tremendous athlete but they need to develop somebody else or teams will sit on him. He had about 40 carries and threw the ball all but once I think and still had some success so if they had something to go with him they could be at least a spoiler for somebody, and if I can't win it I would take pleasure is spoiling it for someone else.

I would also like to add that what Abbott is quoted to have said was in no way a slam to the Whitley Co kids. He said what he believed his team was good at. Had he said 'They won't be able to run on us', you would have a very valid point. I still don't know who is supposed to have made an comments about 'feasting' on their opponent. I have never heard that before.

I listened to Coach Abbott's postgame interview on the radio. He thought the game plan would work, but it obviously did not. He raved about how tough the Whitley fullback was to bring down and how hard he ran. As far as adjustments, I think they tried to make some adjustments, but while they worked early in the 2nd half, Coach Black and his staff made their own adjustments and very effectively. This is a new offense the Jags put in this year and at times it has looked very good, ... at others, they struggle to find an identity. They seem to want to run and every so often throw deep. I would think the intermediate routes would work better if the run draws people up to the line of scrimmage, because they don't have enough speed at WR to just blow by people on the deep routes and get open. They need more timing routes and I just don't see them running many of them. I thought that Whitley's line really dominated the game on both sides of the ball on Friday. They looked legit to me.

As far as Whitley being the best in the district, I stand by that statement until proven wrong. I think they really are stepping up big this year and Coach Black knows how to coach. I like the fact that he has adjusted his offense to his talent. He is used to throwing the ball a lot before he got to Whitley, but the Whitley County kids are used to pounding the ball from middle school up. I really respect a coach who doesn't try to fit a square peg in a round hole and use the strengths of his players.

I hope that North can recover and start to put together an entire game where they don't get down on themselves. They have talent, but much of it is young and still may need another year to really blossom.

It appears that NL is going now where. WC totally dominated them and NL had no answers. 2-8 looks like the best NL can do now.

I agree, also think it's time for the head coach to consider stepping down. After Greg Duncum had back to back winning season's for the first time in school history, NLHS is only 8-26 under David Abbott for a winning % of 23.53. IMHO someone else deserves a chance.:flame:

I think we are not the only ones sharing the opinion. Nothing against Coach Abbott seems to be a good man but it is time to move on.

I to agree, Coach Abbott seems to be a good man, however his time at North Laurel should be over. IMO Coach Duncum left the program in good shape. I'm just saying the kid's of North Laurel deserve a chance to win, however under Coach Abbott it seems as if they have lost hope.

The North Laurel downward spiral continues. How much longer can the administration sit back and watch this program be ran into the ground? NL does have young talent, but it never develops at the high school level, which has been the problem there for about the past 5 years.

I believe they have to show improvement this season or there will be some changes.

- In 2004 they have the 2nd of back to back winning seasons and playoff appearances and nearly upset 4A runnerup Scott County (Duncum's last year). Did lose 1,500 yards & 20+ TDs per season when Nick Blair graduated.

- In 2005 they were 3-7. Sadly, 5 of those 7 losses were by a TD or less, but did upset #8 Madison Central. Did lose Chris Cessna early to a blown knee and never fully seemed to get their wind back.

- In 2006 they were 3-7 again, but lost more games in blowouts

- In 2007 were 1-9, only win over Leslie County

- In 2008 are currently 1-3, only win over Lawrence County

The offense has improved this year over last and they do have a lot of sophomores playing key roles, but they haven't shown the improvement many thought they would. I know that noone has given more effort than Coach Abbott and his staff, but the results have just not been what they have hoped for this season. I certainly hope they do show improvement thru these last 6 games. Abbott is a good man and does care about the kids, but they have to find a way to pick up some key wins and at least get into the playoffs this season. I believe they can and hope they do.

North Laurel's program may be in shambles, but right now in the season is not the time to be bashing your own coach. I hate when people do this, people who are real North Laurel fans would support the kids and hope for the best learning enviroment for them. These discussions are for after the season, but real fans would already understand that.

I haven't saw anyone bashing a coach, however the fact remains somthing has to be done for the kids sake.

I don't think it is in a shambles. I just think that they have to start getting results very soon. I think the world of Coach Abbott and those kids. I still believe they will get this turned around.

I am just responding to asking for a coaches job in the middle of the season. This is crazy. Last year I heard some Whitley fans say the same thing about Black, when Whitley was going through hard times and it angered me then. It makes the situation worse for the kids. Now, Black is having sucess in the program. I also think back at Uk with coach Brooks, and how people called for his job. Now he is succesful. I am personally a Williamsburg fan ad have no stake, but I have seen the affects when negativity is allowed to go. All I am saying is that if people feel that way, that there is a more appropriate time.

You referred to the program as being in a shambles. How is that statement any help to the kids? I do understand what you are saying, and agree that this kind of talk does no good.

Here is my solution to the problem from what I have heard and personally observed. The parents need to band together and support these kids and the coaching staff and do it RIGHT NOW. If all the parents will do this, you might be surprised what this team could accomplish. I know they have talent. But talent is wasted without the proper attitude, ... a winning attitude, .... a team attitude.

Look at Trinity and St Xavier. They have kids who will never see more than special teams play and those kids take pride in whatever role they can play to help their team. The parents at those programs support their kids and coaches and guess what, .. they win!
