What's the Call?

Thought I'd make a new thread so more people might play.

The posession arrow is set to Team B and there's a jump ball. B1 is taking the ball out of bounds on the alternating posession throw-in. While doing so, B1 holds the ball through the plane of the sideline and is tied up by A1 resulting in a jump ball. What happens now?

Since the throw-in had not ended and no violation occurred, it's still B's ball for an alternating possession throw-in.

It is a T-Foul on team B.

Why would it be a foul on Team B?

The alternate arrow does not switch untill the ball is in play. Stays B's ball ! I would think?:scared:

Time is running out (less than 5 seconds) in the game and Team A is down by 3.

A1 is dribbling against heavy pressure in the back court. A1 picks up his dribble and in a panic while being trappped by two defenders, throws the ball against Team B's backboard, runs free of the defenders, catches the ball (he's the first to touch it after it hits the board) and throws a long 3/4 court shot that goes in just as the buzzer goes off (he got the shot off in time).

Are we going to OT?

No basket and no OT. A1 has committed a violation. Throwing the ball against the opponent's backboard or an official constitutes another dribble, provided A1 is the first to touch the ball after it strikes the backboard or official.

A1 is dribbling in their backcourt near the half court line.

The official's back court count has reached 9, A2 makes an airborne pass (the ball is airborne, A2 isn't, just pointing out it's not a bounce pass) to A3 who is at the top of the key in the front court. While the ball is above the floor in the front court and before A3 touches it, the official's count reaches 10.

Is it a violation since the ball itself was across half court when the count hit 10?

Back to the first post. I do not believe it is jump ball. If Team B has not released the ball and Team A reaches and makes contact before Team B lets go of the ball it is a Technical Foul on Team A. You can not have a jump ball with Team B still out of bounds. It does not matter that Team B reached the ball across the plane of out of bounds.

Depends on which team I am rooting for.

As soon as the player on Team B reaches through the plane with the ball, Team A can contact the ball without penalty.

It would only be a technical on Team A if they reached across the plane and contacted the ball. Team A has a right to the ball since it was through the plane, this is a tie-up and a jump ball.

However, as madman stated, the throw-in had not ended and Team B didn't violate so they retain the ball. It's Team B's ball again for a throw-in in the same spot and as soon as the throw-in is complete, the arrow is switched to Team A.

This is a rule that most people don't know. If the thrower holds the ball through the end-line or side-line plane, the opponent can get it. Straight out of the NFHS Case Book. Rule 7.6.4 Situation F: Thrower A1 holds the ball through the end-line plane during a throw-in. B1 is able to het his/her hand on the ball and A1 cannot pull it back. Ruling: There is no player or team control during a throw in, therefore a held ball is called, resulting in an alternating-possession throw-in. If the original throw-in is an alternating-possession throw-in, Team A still has the arrow following the held ball.

Violation by Team A as the ball has not gained frontcourt location. It is B's ball for a throw-in from the out-of-bounds spot closest to where A2 released the ball on the pass toward A3. Straight out of NFHS Case Book, 9.8 Situation A.
