That's a safe assumption since it sounds like there's been no official talk at all about building a new Highlands stadium.

 

Yep, I really like the idea of obtaining that land where Kmart is. Not that I wish it upon anyone but, the reality is, when that new pavilion goes in across from Blockbuster, Not only will it hurt Kmart plaza and stores there, but it will also probably further damage the already crumbling reputation of the Newport Shopping Center across the street from there as well. I would imagine that the lower level (the old Van Lunen's) will not suffer but may see some new stores since Kroger will put the over-priced and unsatisfactory selection of Remke's out of business, then you'll see that area spread out. I don't see is as far-fetched at all for NCC to obtain this land when Kmart goes down to the All Mighty TAR-GET!

Newport has a nice field and the football programe is so bad they should just get rid of there football and sell the stadium to NCC.

This was discussed around eight years ago , but was scrapped . Too much opposition from both NCC and Brossart . It would have been built across from St Joeseph Parish and behind Bob Evans in Cold Spring .

 

I think a great place for this would be down next to Castellini in Wilder. Then Brossart, NCC, Holy Cross, and /or any other school that might need it.

Did NCC put any funding into the turf at Newport stadium? I had heard that NCC put up some of the money to the Newport Scholl District in return for a long term contract to continue use of the field.

I don't know for sure, but I would seriously doubt that.

A few years back their was a proposal on the table to have Newport School Board, NewCath and the City of Newport form a partnership. This partnership would buy the Stadium, the surrounding tennis Courts, Maintenance buildings etc.

 

The plan was to renovate the entire park area, including a Turf field with Newport and NewCath being joint tenants. The City of Newport using a Federal grant would renovate the surrounding areas, including a walking/biking path that would go all the way down to the Levy. Tying in the Park all the way to the River. I thought it was pretty far along, but I believe it ran into resistance from the Newport School board, and lost one of its biggest backers whem Mr. Ciafardini left his post as City Manager.

 

I had heard the Rumor that the ex-Coach Mr. Schlarman was dead set against the plan, and that he swayed the Board not to support the plan.

 

Obviously now that the new field is in place, this "partnership" is no longer a possibility.
