Horse Collar Tackle

Featured Replies

I know you can wrap up the legs, but you take a chance of getting kicked in the face and hands, or missing all together. I'm not trying to be smart here, I'm just trying to make sense of the situation, how else would you tackle someone from behind?

Alot of players POP the ball out, wrapping the runner from the elbows/small of the back area. Better technique IMO.

Why implement a new rule. Isn't there a rule for unnecessary roughness already?

If it is not unnecessary roughness, then why need a rule?

I saw a few tackles in the Highlands Colerain game where the Colerain players made some horsecollar tackles and I was very worried for the players involved. I hope that something is done.

I also hate the rule. By the way Boyle's 8th team was called for a 15 yard personal "horsecollar" tackle two weeks ago. I think it was just the crew's ignorance because I looked it up after I got home and it is not a rule this year. I also informed our coaches that it is currently not a rule so they can argue and pull out a rule book next time.

I'm all for a horse collar rule. I would also like to see a clear cut rule on "helmet tackling." You know, when it is not a facemask, but they just literally grab the helmet and pull them down by it. WHile not a facemask, it can still cause some of the same issues with injuries and danger. I had a big fullback last year get pulled down by the rear of his helmet twice in the same game, with no call. Just looks too dangerous to ignore.

As gamehuntr said, many defenders will wrap around the waist and attempt to poke the ball out from behind. When I was a smaller player in high school, I would do this, and then try to wrap my legs around the ballcarriers legs. I think this causes greater risk of injury than simply pulling a ball carrier down by the back of the shoulder pads.

I disagree.;)

I have seen two High school football games this year and two horse collar tackles. In both instances the player being tackled was bent backwards to the point that I was concerned that the player was injured. I have to wonder why KHSAA feels that it is safe at the High school level for this type of tackling. When it has been determined that it is unsafe in the NFL and also at the college level. I know we are all a little slower in Kentucky but when you see the NFL and the NCAA giving 15 yard penalties because it is unsafe you would think that KHSAA would follow the leader. Just my thoughts.

It has absolutely nothing to do with the KHSAA, it's the NFHS. This is the normal progression of rule changing. First it starts in the NFL, then the NCAA, and if it's a problem in HS (which it is) then it will trickle down over the next couple years and probably be illegal by 2010.

Because kids are getting injured on this particular tackle, that's why.

KIDS DON'T TRY THIS AT HOME.
